Default Dismal swamp canal

Been moving boats from NC to Florida and back for years but never north. Owner wants to go thru canal when it reopens. Would like to talk to someone that has done it and ask some questions. Thanks in advance

If you're referring to "the Ditch" from the Pungo River through o the Alligator River, l wasn't aware that it was closed.

I've been through there many times, just not recently. It's a beautiful strip of water, just take plenty of bog dope. The yellow flies, and green head horse flies will be especially thick this time of year.

Greg ....

I've done it a couple of times the biggest thing is insuring you have a clean navigable channel in the Dismal Swamp Canal. If it reopens as scheduled then you'll know you have at least 6' to work with. There are docks at the NC Welcome Center just before you enter Va. I'm guessing you going to go north from MHC via Core Creek to Adams Creek across the Neuse River then the Pamalico to the Alligator River. If you can take the canal then you can't take the ICW north from Coinjock across the Currituck Sound into Va. You 'll have to go thru the locks at Great Bridge but thats a piece of cake. There are 2 draw bridges on that route. Nice trip.

I'm guessing you meant "Can't" take the canal.

I have been on the other route several times (coinjock, great bridge) in sailboats that draw about 5'. There is some shoaling but its overall pretty good. I have never taken the dismal swamp canal as it was not in good shape when I was making the trip.

Been through it a few times before the closing. Plan on a full day from Elizabeth City to Norfolk with a pit stop at the NC visitor's center. Lock generally have four openings, with the last one at 3:30pm.

Thanks folks. will watch for notice that they have reopened and Tom, you are right, if going immediately after opening things should be fine especially on the draft of what I'm taking. Talk to you soon, thanks again

Make sure you have plenty of fuel, no fuel at the Pelican Marina in Elizabeth City and at last word no fuel at Lambs Marina in Camden. If your northbound you can fill up at the Alligator River Marina before you cross the Albemarle Sound into the Pasquotank River..If southbound plenty of places in Virginia. In the Pasquotank north of Elizabeth City be careful of debris where the river narrows especially after storms...I understand the Corps is cleaning out the canal pretty well.

Thanks for the tip on fuel. I thought Lamm's was in business but so be it. yes Alligator river would be the only place prior to E. City. all that I have read speaks to the debris in the river and canal. thanks again
