Default Highway patrol stopped a large hydra sports today

I was traveling back from Atlantic Beach to Raleigh when I saw this 30 foot Hydra Sports with triple axles being stopped by the Chevrolet Tahoe Highway Patrol SuV that does the truck checks on the roads.

Anyone know what the heck is going on here? Are we getting ready for round 2 with these guys? I hope not and if anyone has the scoop, please chime in.

AB, we must have come thru there about the same time. I posted a thread on this same thing earlier today. It was somewhere around 200 when I saw it. Hopefully, he didn't have to drop that HS there.

What kind of tow vehicle was it? Could it perhaps have exceeded the GVWR, and the Trooper was doing a spot-check? Lots of reasons he may have been pulled over.

I trailer to hatteras N.C. a couple times a year and havent got bothered. My boats only about 8 ft beam and 26 ft long but on average N.C. on I 95 is the worse trap zone between Fl and the north east. Its almost like a mandate to stop trailer boats on 95. They stopped a friend of mine who is a retired cop and still pounded him with fines just recently. He had the wide permits for the bahama CC but they found a weight distrubution problem on the triple axle trailer and his dually diesel tow vehicle??$$$ I guess its a N.C. self stimulus promoting program$$$$

vettnman,

I did not see your thread until about 2 seconds after I posted mine. I can be distracted sometimes but I just was twisted up when I saw this and told my wife that I hope this stuff is not coming alive again with the testosterone bunch. I am not slamming the patrol but I hope they will spend more time on the overweight trucks and leave us fishermen alone.

I don't know if the boat was over the 9 6" beam or not but I suspect it might have been. If we don't hear what happened, I might give Les Collins a call this week as it was on a trailer with his Logo. Maybe he will hear about it.

Might have been one of Collins boats at that. He was heading 70W. I thought the same thing when I saw the DOT had him pulled over. I didn't see any oversize banners or flags, and it did look oversize. That being said, my 24 looks oversize behind my SUV. When I came by, he had the back of the tahoe open which told me he was performing an inspection and probally weigh check as well. Truck was either a F250 or F350.

Guys,

it could be that the was checking to see if the tags he had on the truck covered the Gross Vehicle weight of the truck and trailer. Not everyone understands that you can get a Commercial tag,,, but you have to specify what GVW you want to purchase, the standard weight ( I thinks it's 6000lbs) would not cover the weight of that boat. I had to purchase a 10k or 12k lb tag to cover my truck and the 31' Contender I pull from EI to Granville County. Chances are he was going to weigh the trailer. Funny thing is one of the HP officers with the Commercial check Tahoe lives here in EI.

Give you guys a little insight on them. At the intersection of HY 64 and I-95 they have set up shop.. MM 138 is the Ex number on I-95 and any of you coming in from that direction are subjects to be stopped. They are after anything and everything. With my Lincoln Ala run now I come back up to Kenly hit 301 and cut through the woods over through Pine Tops and back out that way.
Can't help you down south of there but I have seen as many as 6 Black Chevys all over the interchange right there. Nothing has changed but they are starting to enforce things more and you will see more of them as the summer moves on.
One of my friends had two tire straps on the back of the cab just laying there. No way in H it was going to fall off and its kinda a bed like a pickup bed. $450 dollars for not have one strap holding down the other one .. Go figure.
Just have your ducks in a row, go legal and there is nothing they can do but waist your time on the side of the road, after checking your family out and anything else they can come up with to bother you....
We have started calling them Nats out here. They get around you and won't go away.......

Bud unless your awful light are you sure 12k will cover both. My Fountain should be a lot lighter than your contender and truck, camper and boat are 21000 pounds. If 12k covers you , your lucky and tags have to cover combined weight of truck and trailer.

NOPE,,,, Your tags on the truck MUST cover the combined weight of everything that is on both the truck and trailer. This is why I mentioned this to Bud. That seems awful light for his rig in tags. Sorry but they are not giving brakes any more. ;?

Go to court and they should knock the fine down some.
Another friend of mine got caught crossing a low weight bridge in Va. Fine was 12800 dollars. Went to court and they knocked it down to 3500.00

They gave brakes last year for a while but we are into the second year now. Find out what your truck and trailer weigh and get tags to cover the weight or your going to get busted guys... Big time.

If I'm not mistaken there are a couple of items to mention:

First, if your trailer has a GVWR greater than 10K you have to have a Class A drivers license; it appears he may not have gotten you for that.

Second, if you are not using the boat for commercial commerce; ie tournament fishing, chartering, etc. then you are considered recreational. Just like the guys that pull the tag along campers and fifth wheels I think they do not have a tag that covers the GVWR.

I hope this helps, and I may be wrong but this is how I understand it.

Good Luck

As a previous thread had mentioned I am moving my boat from MHC to Wanchese and wanted to do some maintenance work on the boat so as I was pulling the boat back to Garner while traveling thru Goldsboro minding my own business doing 50 mph I see blue lights. I pull over and the officer ask for my license and registration who then proceeds to tell me my truck is not rated for the weight I am pulling. Has me follow him 5 miles down the road to weigh me and then informs me I am in violation by 12,000 pounds!..truck was registered for 7,000 pounds and truck trailer and boat weighed in at 19,400..he did take off 500 pounds that they give you...hands me a ticket for $850...I mentioned to him this was only 2 or 3rd time the boat was on the hi way as it normally stays on lift year round...he basically said it was my ignorance but that I could challenge if I choose too.

Anybody run into this before or know of a way around this?
I can tell you that for all the stories of NJ and large Govt. We still dont need a salt water liscence and I tow boats in NJ sometimes with out even a trailer tag and know cops bother us..Our biggest problem is with the C G training base in south jersey these kids from oklahoma and wyoming fresh out of their boot camp stomping all over our nice decks in storm trooper boots pointing 50 cal at boating familes several times a week end.

Don't know where the hell he got that, basic tag covers up to 9,000lbs. Anything over that, combined weight of truck, boat, trailer, gear, passangers etc needs the correctly sized weighted tag. Unless you're pulling with an SUV.

Did the guy bring up overwidth or trailer inspection?

Any idea about what a tag for 21,000 lbs costs? Process to get covered?
