Default Live Baiting for Spanish

Well.....2 days out for King and Mahi didn't produce much earlier in the week so Friday I made some rigs, caught some pogies and headed out between Key Post & the fishing pier out of Bogue Inlet with some friends.

We got 5-6 really nice Spanish and lost 3-4 more. I'd always used Clark Spoons in the past and heard about this live baiting so gave it a try. Used couple type rigs, some with double treble and some with single trailing treble. Doubles seemed to catch more fish, or at least we lost fewer on these rigs.

Lots of fun and close in. Never caught this size Spanish before and not sure I'll ever use the spoons again as long as I can find bait.

Great Report....I started live baiting spanish by accident. We were running near the Lookout lighthouse early one morning, when we spotted a small menhaden school being harassed by something big. I grabbed a light spinning rod with a crystal minnow on and proceeded to foul hook a large bait. While I was bringing it in, a 24" spanish came from underneath and inhaled the large menhaden. I only had him on for a few seconds. But the high it produced will live on....Sorry I didnt mean to hijack this post.

We used medium size pogies and just bumped the motor in gear or drifted.....slow troll. No pics..........they jumped in the frying pan too quick

You can also pull dead cigar minnows. I use Blue Water Candy dead bait rigs. You can actually troll with this and cover more ground. Works great on larger Spanish.
