Default Stealing Catalytic Converters

Apparently it's a thing again and it's happening at boat ramps around Charleston and other places. My son, who lives in West Ashley, had 2 stolen off of his work trucks at home. The police said that it's really picking up again.

Also heard that it's happening at boat ramps around inland lakes.

Be aware.....

Yep. My cousin had all the emmissions crap stolen off a 3 day old Ram 5500 last week. Evidently a big black market for such since the dealers charge so much for those parts out of warranty.

A cordless reciprocating saw(think Sawzall) and about maybe 5 minutes. Cut the exhaust pipe on each side and drop it out. They target trucks because they are high enough off the ground to get under.....

Investigator told my son that it was mostly crack-addicts and meth-heads and that the price of some precious metals had gone up recently....

Interesting to hear. I am on a car forum and noticed someone posting up willing to buy cats since a lot of guys delete them with aftermarket downpipes. I had wondered if scrap prices were up. I used to be in manufacturing and dealt with scrap metal and kind of knew what was going on with prices. I wonder if the govt has slowed pumping $ into the economy and and the scumbags are running out of cash plus the world metals market changing prices.

I don't understand how the government hasn't put some sort of rule in place to stop this... Seems like scrap yards are knowingly buying stolen goods. No one just happens to find a handful of catalytic converters while walking down the street.

No but lots of shops doing aftermarket 'off road mods" will have a stock on hand.

They could also be required to have a current business license in hand to sell them.

Scrap yards around me started requiring a mailing address and an ID for copper back when tearing up HVAC units was the thing. They'd tell you that they would mail you a check. That put a halt to stealing copper, pretty much..

Supposed to have a scrap permit to sell such as an individual now. Issued by the sheriffs department.
