Little trick, take the small black rubber bands that you use for ballyhoo or kids braces. Inflate your balloon and tie a knot in it. Then loop the small rubber band around your line and then put the loop over the ballon mouth part with the knot. The small rubber band is slim profile and plenty of pressure to keep the ballon in place. Then when you take your line in, the ballon comes off with a quick pull and it’s ready to go on another rod. The rubber band is a small profile and goes through kingfish guides just fine

NEVER tie to swivel or main line. We run a 2 ft piece of mono from swivel. Tie balloon to that. You can doubl a short piece of mono and tie it. This creates a loop. Run through swivel and back through. Then you have a loop to tie to. Helps keep pogies from circle and fouling.

harder to get off in my opinion. The way I mentioned is a simple pull and the loop comes off to reuse. Nothing like trying to cut off the tip of a ballon from 20# mono in rocking seas

I shouldn't say it's wrong to tie to main line. Whatever works best for you. Personally I've done better with tag line. Pogies tend to circle. With tag line it's not as big of a problem. If you get cut off when balloon fishing its usually because pogie and wire have wrapped your mainline
