Default OBX/Kill Devil Hills Bound, Dumb Question

My son and I are taking our '72 Chevy Blazer from just west of Knoxville to the OBX. It's his final fall break as a high school senior, and he wanted us to take the Blazer that he's loved all his life. We'll be staying in Kill Devil Hills, and I was hoping to find a shop of some sort with either an overhead lift or enough manpower to remove and store the fiberglass hardtop so we can enjoy the wind and sun. Sucker weighs a ton, and it's way more than a two man job.

Anybody have any recommendations?

I would call Lighthouse Automotive in Manteo. They could probably store it for you. This would be the first place I would call.

Pugh’s Car Care would be another place to call.

Hello, Storm offshore lots of ocean over wash on hwy 12,long stretch of hwy closed, no room to drive on large areas of beach on Hatteras Island. Better check with weather service before driving that far.

You will definitely get some of it all, rain, wind and sun. The Beach should be fine in a few days. You will have to purchase a Beach Permit for beach driving anywhere south of South Nags Head.

I love that Blazer. I wrecked my dad's '71 when I was 17. I still cry about it 33 years later. I miss that truck.

In KDH you'll be fine. No driving on the beach up there. Hatteras Island is bad though. The above pic was taken ON THE ROAD. The dune is pushed back over the roadway. We are heading to Hatteras this coming weekend. It should be cleaned up by then.

My dad bought one brand new in ‘72, baby shit yellow. I beat around with it in High School for a bit. I should have told my mom to keep it, but it was pretty far gone with rust. She basically gave it away.

mine was baby $hit green. We fixed some rust and painted it dark green. 305 with 3 on the tree. Had some issues, but was my first truck. After I wrecked it a guy bought it, straightened the frame, lifted it and painted it copper with a black top. Looked like a frikken duracell battery. I was in tears.

OP, enjoy your stay. Looks like the weather is shaping up nicely for the next week, after Beta rolls thru Friday.

Maybe it’s a good thing we’re taking the Blazer after all. It would suck to have weather screw up our trip, but I didn’t realize they were still dealing with road closures. If that’s the case, we may have to reconsider our route and forgo the ferry ride from Cedar Island. That’s our favorite part of the trip.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Speaking of lighthouses, does COVID have Hatteras Lighthouse closed?

We’ve climbed it on our previous two trips, but it would sort of suck not to be able to do it a third time. That being said, this is more a man trip thing in the old Blazer than it is about anything else. I’ve never been to the OBX in October, but I couldn’t think of a better destination.

Roads are supposed to be open by 2pm today. This site has up to date info on road closures.

https://www.drivenc.gov/

Lighthouse climbing is closed for season due to COVID.

That pic is Rodanthe, way south of KDH where you're staying. Rte 12 to the new bridge is fine, and 12 south to Hatteras should be open by time you get there...if a local shop won't do it call the Jeep/Ram dealer, they seems like good folk. As already mentioned get an offroad pass.

OBX Affordable Automotive will most likely accommodate you, if you haven't found anyone else.

Also, I think you can drive on the beach in KDH/Nags head during the off season.
