Default The Consolidated NC THT Chesapeake Striper Thread

The plan is to arrive in the Tidewater area on Thursday early evening the 18th. Have a quick get together to discuss plan and tactics (and unwind from the trip). Fish Friday. Unwind Friday evening (and hopefully clean fish). Repeat on Saturday. Breakfast and early departure on Sunday.

What is undecided is where to put the trailer boats in the water.

I’m staying with Mike. There was some discussion about the Comfort Inn on Shore Drive near Little Creek. Has anyone made reservations anywhere yet? It would be nice for those traveling to stay at the same place. Preferably near the ramp.

Those who have expressed an interest:

From NC:
Capt. Hook
Hotspot
Trollnheel
Jonafare
Weekend Hooker

From NE NC:
JeffSpencer
Dawiggs
Broncobirdy

From VA:
xxmikexx
Reelwork
Walden75
dwg2116
Ktrain
Mud Runner

From parts unknown:
mtcfish

As it stands now we have two boats, xxmikexx and Capt Hook. Mike’s boat is in Little Creek, Hook’s is on a trailer.

With Mike will be me so far.

With Hook will be Hotspot and Trollnheel (these are about the only folks I know are going)

Lets hear from you others yea or nay and whether you have a boat available and where it is.

Thats cool, that is about 45 min from Mike's house. Any help from the VA Beach folks about where to stay near Rudee would be appreciated.

If anyone has a military ID, the Sleep Inn at Lake Wright just off 64 @ Northampton (13N) will give a nice 3 bed suite for the same price as a regular room, about $80 with tax. I've stayed at every hotel in the area and Lake Wright is the nicest. It's clean, the towels are huge and thick, water pressure is good, they have an indoor pool, hot tub, and fitness room, lots of parking and room for big trailer boats, we've never had anything stolen (but don't leave stuff in pickup beds). Regular price of a suite is around $129 so the military ID is a huge benefit. I've paid for two suites on one military ID before without any trouble but am not sure how far that can be pushed. Our only complaint is that you've got to carry your stuff to your room and it's a decent walk to the elevator fully loaded, it's a hotel not a motel. Edited because I forgot to mention that they have a free buffet breakfast starting at 6am for suite guests.

Best Stromboli in town delivers to Lake Wright, Mama Mia's and if you want a pound of mozzarella in it, ask for extra cheese. If you don't agree that they are the best, please tell me where you got better so I can visit there one day.

Best steak in that area is the Aberdeen Barn, their prime rib is the best I've ever eaten. Figure $40 per person with appetizer and a drink, well worth it. Same deal as the Stromboli, I think they are awesome but if you don't, share your honey hole.

For breakfast, Denny's is just a little further down the road. For lunch, there is a Mongolian Buffet in the strip mall across from Denny's that will fill a big belly for less than $20.

Ocean East II is THE tackle shop for Rockfish, just down the street from Lake Wright and Aberdeen Barn. Prices are decent, not great, but they have everything.

Fish the outgoing current for Stripers, either the CBBT, Cape Henry, or the Eastern Shore. Tidelog is your friend, don't go by the published tides to get the current. Since buying Tidelog, my fishing success has seriously improved. If you have to travel to fish, improve the odds by fishing when the fish will actually bite. It's only fun for a little while to watch a full fishfinder and not be able to buy a bite, big Rockfish eat when the water is moving.

Launch out of Owl Creek if you want the nicest ramps. They get busy but usually move pretty good, never sat in the truck more than 1/2 waiting for a ramp even when the line was out of the parking lot. Cobbs Marina can handle a big trailer boat also but the ramps aren't as nice and parking sucks but it will put you a little closer to the Eastern Shore via CBBT.

If we decide to fish for Rockfish that weekend, I'd be interested in meeting some of you. We may head to OI though, they are still tearing up the YFT. If you guys have any questions between now and then, I almost live in VA Beach each winter.

Thanks UBETRUN that is some good info. Although, I am a Lighthouse Tackle regular myself, they are at Shore Dr and 13.

Can you be so kind as to check the tides for the 19th and 20th??

As of now, I will be in town that weekend, ship is gonna be pulling in the first of next week. I have ZERO clue as to what my schedule is gonna look like though, and Im planning on having my father come up the same days to fish with me as well.......I keep my boat in Little Creek at Taylors landing, but it aint no 26Albe!! If the weather holds good, I can make the run around to CH, or Rudee w/o any worries, from what I heard last week, the bite seemed to be further north around the Smith Island and 4A Bouy....the water is so dern warm right now, it makes sense to me. We have also been having GREAT success with the eeling at night time up near the Highrise....cant take em home....but catching 30+ fish all in the upper 30" to 45" range was ALOT of fun!!!

I would love to dedicate myself to being somewhere at a certain time and place, but with my crazy watch schedule, I may not know until middle of next week, when I can fish. I'll certainly stay up on this thread to try and follow yall's schedule, I hope I (we, me and my dad) can get involved as much as possible!!!

Good Luck!!
Any help from the VA Beach folks about where to stay near Rudee would be appreciated.
If you want to launch out of Rudee, call the Day's Inn at 1000 Atlantic Ave. It's near Rudee Inlet and you can park the boat in their lot. They run a $29.95 special during Striper season. Just make sure you ask for the Fishermans special. Launching at Owl's Creek ramp which is at the Virginia Marine and Science Museum is free but get there early. If you have Virginia tags on your trailer and it requires breaks make sure you have your inspection certificate. The cops at the ramp are like flies on doo doo looking to write tickets. It's nowhere near 45 min to Rudee more like 15-20.

I just booked me, Ralph and Hook at the Comfort Inn between Little Creek and Lynnhaven landing. I got a military rate of $68 for a double room with three adults.

We will be arriving Thursday night between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

Where are we meeting for the Captains meeting on Thursday night Tom?

Thanks for the advice Carlos!

Steve,

The Surf Rider Restaurant is probably a good place to meet. You can get some good seafood priced right and some adult beverages and they don't mind if you come in off the boat because they're at Taylor's Landing Marina. It's about 5 min from your hotel on Shore Road. Lighthouse Tackle also has a store at Taylor's. By the way, you could probably spit at the guard at the gate at Little Creek Amphib base from your hotel room. You're that close.

Not me! No hablo Ingles! I like your signature. Someone told me that a while back. So I poured gasoline on my past and the rest is history.

Here's info on Taylor's with a weather and tide link.

Brad,

Nothing planned yet. JoAnne is still down with the crud. Four meds and no progress. We'll play it by the hour.

I appreciate the help guys!

We can have the Capt Meeting at the Surf Rider or I can volunteer Mike's garage. It is beer friendly, there is room to discuss techniques and we can build a fire if necessary.

Sorry to hear JoAnne is sick, its looking worse for me for watches anyway.....nobody gonna be around to take mine that weekend. I debating even trying to invite my dad up, if Im gonna have to work weird hours.

Short notice may be best for me too.
