Default Shackleford Erosion

I noticed a rock bulkhead at the now tip of Shack, at the Beaufort Inlet end. Is that a new attempt to stop erosion, or an old formation just being exposed?

Question was really about the rocks, not the erosion. My bad on the title.

It’s old, it was built on the inlet depression era. That’s where the inlet was pre-Bardens Inlet blowing out

A little off topic, but if you are looking for a great summer read, and one that deals with erosion, sea level rise, changing coastlines etc, check out chesapeake requiem. It's about Tangier Island. Excellent book. Just finished it.

Noticed those rocks the other day. Been going down quite a bit in the last few years, certainly haven't seen any rocks being added so must be old. That time lapse makes it look like Barden's inlet is pinching shut. Cool image.

All caused by the relocation of the shipping channel to the east then the subsequent moving it back. There is a Dolphin marker that used to be 10 yards off the beach at Shackleford now it's a mile from the beach.

You can watch the shifting of sands on Google Earth time lapse. Just zoom into the area you are interested in. https://earthengine.google.com/timelapse/

this, and it also has to do with Ophelia Inlet choking off Bardens Inlet, which causes more water to flow thru Beaufort Inlet

Thanks for posting. Looks like the western end is almost back to the 1946 location.

I haven't surfed since the early 90's. I had no idea about the history at Shack. Thanks for sharing.

That time lapse page can be a black hole for map junkies.

One thread a few years ago showed the actual distance from a fixed Geological Survey marker at Fort Macon to the point of Shack, over some number of years.

This video was taken in September of 2012. The first day beacon (southside of Shackleford used to be right on the beach in 2011 (note ... it has been removed since this video was shot) and the second one a Dolphin marker (northwest end of Shackleford used be within 10 yards off the beach.
