Default Manteo NC

Hello guys, we're planning on taking a family vacation to Manteo in July. We'll be staying at a Air BnB on ShallowBag Bay. Our plan was to take our boat and use it in the sound and maybe the Alligator River a few days while we are there. I would like to know if anyone has advice on some good spots to hit. This will be 100% cruising/sand bar. No fishing. Kids are 6 and 3 so we would like to stay close. We normally boat on the Pamlico River and sometimes venture to the Pamlico Sound if the weather is nice. Boat is a 22' Chaparral. It has a deep V hull and is fairly sea worthy as far a small bowriders go.

Banana Island (highlighted) will be the best sandbar to go to in the Manteo area. Manteo waterfront has public docks and I think you can tie up overnight there. You can walk from there to restaurants and shopping. Pretty nice area.

You can just tie up there in Shallowbag Marina, ( are you staying in the condos there?) they are typically very friendly. Can likely get some sandbar tips there as well. You can putt on down and sight see at Pirates cove, and into Wanchese, lots of good boat eye candy. Roanoke Island is a lot of fun, and of course you can hit the Ocean beaches pretty easily. You should have a great time!

I can't think of any reason to go to the Alligator River.

I agree, Alligator River is not the place to take children/adults swimming. The name is actually a warning. Manteo is pretty close to Oregon Inlet and that area has some of the most beautiful views imageable. Stay in the channels and you will be ok. Attached is an alligator hit by a vehicle near Alligator River.

We are staying at an Air BNB on one of the canals off of Shallowbag. It has a dock behind it so I'm thinking I'll leave the boat in the water there for a few days.

So stay out of the Alligator River. Got it.

are you going to keep the boat at the town docks right downtown Manteo or at Shallow Bag Bay Marina? There is a huge sand bar in the middle of the bay so to get into the marina you can not cut right across the bay, you have to follow the channel all the way to the docks then turn left. I have seen many boats get confused including myself and end up on the bar.

The beach just South of the public ramps (on the South side of the bridge - opposite side of Pirate's Cove Marina and about a 200-300yd. run) have always looked like a decent place to beach a boat, as well as being a sandy area. You can sit and watch the big stuff coming up/down the channel and in/out of Pirate's Cove. There's a couple winding cannels that cut through there - towards Wanchese but I don't know if they are navigable? Maybe best to run down the channel and go to port when you get to Wanchese? That "Bananna Island" is, I think, VERY close to where Andy Griffith's place is/was? He passed several years ago, so I have no idea who owns the "estate" now? Not sure if you can "beach" on the West side of Jockey's Ridge - LOTS of sand to play in there if you can!

Have fun - lots of interesting things to do in that area! Not sure if the NC Aquarium (Roanoke Island) is open now or not but your kids would have a ball seeing that!

Regards,

EDIT: Meant to say STARBOARD (right side). Shame to say I was in the NAVY!

Regards,

They're definitely navigable. Some deep water back in there. ^^^^^

Lorne,

Iíll be keeping the boat at the Air B&B. Itís on a canal that connects to Shallowbag bay, and has a dock right behind it.
Iíve looked at the area on google maps and Navionics carts and I believe I see the sand bar you are talking about.

I have a Garmin Echomap 74cv with 2019 G3 charts that Iím hoping are accurate for the area.

There's also a couple of DOLPHIN "sight seeing" boats that run out of Manteo marina and a "pirate ship" (right near the dolphin boats) that is cool for the kids! They may also get a kick out of going out on the Nags Head Fishing Pier. And the Wright Brothers Museum (if open).

Manteo is lucky to have a ramp on both sides of the island so you can get out of the wind. It is a short drive to Manns Harbor if you need another place to explore.

Patrick Byrd runs a shrimping and crabbing boat out of Pirates Cove. 2 hour and 4 hour trips. The best trip on theOuter Banks plus you keep what you catch. Call the Pirates Cove booking office. Kids and adults love it. Great guy also

Yes the canals on the west side leading towards Wanchese are navigable, at least the ones I took our little Whaler into. Spencer Yachts is located near the end of one, for instance. Kind of fun to nose around in there.

When we used to take the Hatteras (5 foot draft) into Shallowbag, I always called the marina I was using and they gave me the latest directions step by step. You can also look at the USACE surveys.

You can ride over to Colington and cruise the canals. Lots of boats and houses to look at.

Keep a close eye on it, especially out of the channels. It can get (too) skinny in a hurry!

We hit Banana Island today and the kids had a blast. There were a few other kids out there that were close in age so they had someone to play with. They are already asking to go back.
