Default Steeples 5/14

Too many damn YFT coming over the docks lately so we decided we'd give it a shot. Left the dock at 4, watched the sunrise literally over Frying Pan Tower and had lines in at 710a.

We were trying to get to steeples for the early tuna bite but about 2-3 miles inshore of steeples we came across a nice looking rip - we were the only boat on it so wanted to work it a bit. Spent 20 mins with no love so we pushed towards the ever growing fleet - counted 13 around 8a. Picked up a mahi on the way and fish in the box by 815a.

Got out to steeples and didn't see or hear anyone doing much of anything. There was bait EVERYWHERE in the water column, bottom was on fire but no flyers or much of any formed weeds. Trolled around and picked up a skipjack and a mahi on a bird / feather rig around 10a.

Around 130p we were making a game plan for the rest of the day and decided to drop a bottom line on one of monster marks. As we are heading there we see a pod of porpoises - must've been 100 of them jumping playing all around it was so crazy to see. Get to the mark and I drop down and hook up immediately with a AJ. Get him to the surface and re-drop. As I drop my line in we see a mahi tailwalking behind us and then 3 seconds later he gobbles up my bottom rig. I start bringing him boat side only to look down and see 40 of his best friends. I thought this was going to be my moment of glory - bailing mahi. I have my guy hooked and swimming around he is lighting up like crazy yellow white blue and i start chunking squid and cuda belly overboard. Had a couple hooked baits out there also but couldn't get any of them to eat a damn thing and just as i'm saying okay lets get this fish in the boat he turns dark green jumps and spits the hook.

We fire back up the troll and there is flying fish jumping vertically out of the water to get away from this frenzied school of mahi. Frustrated and humbled, we plug in our home coordinates and set a full spread. Around 110' we see a group of flying fish slash across our bow and 5 seconds later our long gets knocked down but doesnt come tight then he nails the short b/w jag and game one. In the box he goes and make a couple more passes and bam - this time wwb bird and feather and long monkalur get hit. Decided to finish the day muuuuuuuuch later than we anticipated but putting those last two fish in the box made up for some of the days events.

Pulled through the inlet as the sun was setting and back on the dock at 830p. LONG day, memories made, and lessons learned. Looking forward to only having to run to 100/400 to get these mahi.....
