Windy, Cold & Caught.

Windy days does make it tougher but not impossible. You need to find places to fish out of the wind.
I know that easier for local, like me.
But you have to consider conditions, have a plan the night before launch the boat.
Thursday it blew like crazy. We managed to catch a one topwater Red & one topwater Trout. ( CPR ).
Subsurface lures worked after the topwater did not, continued to another catch 14 keeper Trout (all fish released).

Doesn't anybody work anymore ?????
Fished with Woody ( works 4 x 10 hour days ) yesterday super cold temps, high winds & everybody in the world went fishing. You know type of day - 3 layers of clothing, bone chilling cold, that freezes your face & numbs your fingers. The kind of day that has you struggling, doubting your sanity, questioning your saneness.

With boats everywhere we improvised, left the crowds behind & went our own way. Trying a new place out of the wind, cold & crowds.
Not much topwater love so we went deep. Jig heads & Z-mans, MR 17 & MR 18.
Started catching Lizardfish, these were full grown 3 pounders. That when hooked felt like gator Trout, so we stayed to catch them, to evaluate our skills & test our tackle. These were quality Lizards, throwing up high fives for everyone landed. We forgot about Trout until we started feeling that famous head shaking.......

We ended up with a 2 man limit of Trout, 5 Flounders releases, 2 Rat Reds released & 150 tournament quality winning, fat, hungry Lizardfish.
I lost a nice big Trout at the boat, Woody tried to free net a 5# (?) Sheepshead & we spotted a big Red crusing the marsh bank. We will be keeping this place a secret for awhile.

Yesterday we stopped following the pack, have fun catching Lizards & caught more fish than every boat we spoke to on the way back to the ramp....... ICM

Very nice write up. I have yet to get my boat down into some sat water but hearing stories about fish, tackle and tactics is very valued.

I did have to google lizardfish as I haven't heard them discussed much on here. Sounds like a wonderful time.

The only time that cold matters is when you're not catching fish. One time I took my boys out ice fishing (back when I lived in Illinois) and the high temp was -3F below zero. We found a deep brush pile in an area out of the wind and caught fish all day long. They both remember that day as one of the best days fishing ever.

That's so true. We stopped by a buddy's not catching many fish yesterday that we used to surffish with.
He was complaining about it's going to be too cold to surffish with us late this year.
Both Woody & I talked about it's never cold when your catching....Just like you posted...........ICM

I know that was a fun day. But they all are one way or another.
You're right about people being out. Place down here was bow to bow . I was surprised, wonder why?

Didn't go out though. Dog went to the vet and we are used to doing everything on Friday to avoid turnover day ;)

I saw some Huge Spanish busting mullet minnows inside a couple days ago.
Caught a few trout. Kept a couple, cook em up tonight.

Great day Billy

Proof that you have to spend time on the water to catch the fish.

Nice blue tail on the Red. Wife caught a blue tail Red in the canal behind the house. I wonder where they have been that makes the tails blue.?

Also interesting on the Lizard fish. Really hadn't caught many this year and now they are here, and grown up. Seems the bigger ones are around in the fall.

Don't quote me on this but I believe the blue tails appear in redfish that been foraging primarily on crustacean's. Something to do with the algae that the crabs and shrimp feed on uptaking to the redfish and showing up in the tail. This also supports why you see the blue tails in a lot of juvenile redfish that haven't grown big enough to shift to mullet and other finfish.

Maybe Capt. Amanda or anyone else with a Marine Bio background could weigh in and confirm or correct this as this is just what I've heard.

Whatever the reason, it sure make for a cool looking redfish!

I saw a video on YouTube where a guy ate a lizardfish. Pretty white flesh, and the guy said it was some of the best fish he had eaten.

Newbie question here...
So, lizardfish are considered not good or good?

Kind of sounds like the gar thread from a couple of weeks ago.

Lizard fish are the new NC flounder.

We are becoming Japan.

There are a few ideas on why Redfish tails are blue. Some say its a sign that they're actively feeding....... eating crabs / blue-green algae accumulated from their diet........ and I've heard it's oxygen flow to their tails when moving around. When I have more time I'll research it a little more to see if I can find definitive studies -- I'm headed to Calabash to fish with college students today!

“Humble Brag”, thread, at its finest.

Oh and it doesn’t get too cold here in N.C. to fish, ever.

Lizard fish are considered trash fish, they rip your lures to shreds and they're uglier than sin. I will say that on day when the bite is tough catching a lizard fish does bring a smile to your face. I've never caught one anywhere near the size of ICM but they do tend to fight pretty hard for their size.
