19ft keywest capsized which turned out to be near lighthouse rocks. We were fishing the area near the river channel and ran the search grid on the east side of the river channel. They found the boat and crew and luckily after about 2 or 3 hours.

I was fishing the mad event today and was at lighthouse rocks early. I can say a 19’ boat had no place out there today.

We were fishing MAD around the Baptist Pier when the call came over 72. They radioed they were taking on water and that they were 2-3 miles off OKI, that's a 14 mile wide Island and then they followed with 2-3 miles off the Cape Fear Inlet. Several boats started searching immediately and the Coast Guard launched out of Cape Fear. NO one could spot the vessel. Some even went and searched the Lockwood Folly Area, in case the Capt was confused. Did the boat drift out to the LHR after it capsized or did they not know the area with which they where fishing and had been originally at Lighthouse Rocks? Captains need to know the location they are boating by common name especially as they move from location to location. That search area became huge, once you have to spread out from the original call location after no sign of vessel or debris.
Please all know the area you plan to boat or have someone with you that knows the areas you are traveling. This can increase you and your crews survival chances 10 fold.
I'm thankful all where rescued safely.

We were fishing MAD and I heard it come in over 72. My heart sunk when after the MADAY when someone asked for position he went silent. We were fishing the pier at the inlet. We pulled anchor and went WOT out the inlet in a 37” boat. I went about two miles out and set the RADAR to six miles but could not see anything that was not moving or a marker. We were low on fuel so I had to turn around. We passed the cutter going out. During dinner they announced that they had been found, a weight was lifted.

We we did get to watch them come back in on the boat that picked them up.

Even a plb would have helped a lot. Kinda irresponsible just calling mayday without knowing location.

Key West prides itself on upright positive flotation... Is this an unfortunate case proving otherwise?

Would be interesting to know if the boat had a properly registered DSC radio, and chose to use voice communication as the first option.

I don't understand why an EPIRB or PLB wouldn't be required in order to participate in an event like MAD.
