Default Advice on apartments in Durham

Hi,
From Massachusetts and have son moving to Durham for his first job. Looking for advice on places to live in downtown Durham.

Thanks!

Still some rough parts to Durham but it has cleaned up a lot compared to the past. Tell him to be sure not to stumble into the wrong neighborhood. I imagine almost anywhere in their downtown area would be fine though.

Avoid living in Durham.
Maybe the Brier Creek area between Raleigh and Durham, but no way would I live in Durham.

Not nearly as bad as it used to be.

Have him reach out to the folks he is taking the job with and have them help him a bit.

Downtown Durham has changed - most of the old tobacco facilities have been converted to Apt. or Condos - Its a happening area with lot's of young Duke students around, there is a nice complex which overlooks Durham Athletic Parks - upscale eateries ,clubs are very close, I would live there now and graduated from UNC

Completely agree with Stix. Completely changed landscape. Those telling him to not live in Durham have you been recently?

Here are some to check out, I was born and raised in the Bull City.

Liberty Warehouse Apartments. Very cool old tobacco auction warehouse converted into apartments.
West Village Apartments. Old Liggett Myers buildings converted.
Solis Brightleaf. New apartments although on haunted land. Property was formerly Howerton Bryan Funeral Home. Was sad to see such a long term staple in the funeral business fade away for apartments. My grandfather was the President/Owner of Hall Wynne 2 blocks up Main Street.

I hope these help. Your son will love Durham and while I live at the beach now, there are many days I miss it.

Don't go for an apartment, they are a waste of money. I currently rent a room from a couple that cost half the price of an apartment. Durham isn't that bad especially around Woodcroft.

The transformation of downtown Durham is pretty amazing. There are lots of nice apartments but Iím guessing that area is very pricey to live in. When I got out of college my first job was right above the bulls stadium, total dump. Abandoned hotel across the street was a crack/homeless flop house. Itís changed a lot!

he needs to try Mateo for dinner one night if he likes adventurous eating. They have some interesting dishes and good drinks!

Brasa is also a good spot to go for all you can eat food, it's a Brazilian steak house.

Yes, Durham has changed a lot over the last decade or so but it is still a crime ridden city. Shootings every few nights it seems.

Well according to gillnetflounderman commercial fishermen prevent shark attacks, so maybe they can help with preventing violence in Durham?

Sorry for the hijack.
