Default older 40HP Johnson starter not engaging.

Push button starter on 40 Johnson and nothing. Battery works and so does tilt. Engine will spin if you use 2 screw drivers to jump solenoid. Is that a bad solenoid or possibly something else. Some of my neighbors who are nothing but shade tree mechanics like myself tell me its possibly a bad push button switch or even a bad sensor that thinks the engine is not out of gear. I'm thinking that if by bypassing the solenoid with the 2 screw drivers it has to mean a bad solenoid but like I said am nothing but a shade tree mechanic myself so would appreciate any advice on this matter.

Turn the key on and connect a jumper from the positive on the battery to the positive terminal on the solenoid momentarily. If it starts, you know it's the button. Here's a diagram of the starter circuit.

Doesn't have a key switch, only a push button ignition. tried to touch a wire between the 2 contacts on the push button ignition but nothing. Is it possible that the darn engine thinks its still in gear

Could very well be. May have to jump out the neutral safety switch and push the button to see.

I have a 1988 rude 40 on our skiff. If the above doesnt' work try the following. First thing first check all the connections between the battery and the starter by taking them apart, cleaning them and re-assembling them. Check for resistance and voltage drop at all the connections. Check for corrosion under the wire insulation too. You should have nearly full voltage at the starter. On our boat, it turned out that the starter itself was bad. We had a few burned wires on the armature that made it hit or miss starting reliably. Found a new starter at the used boat shop and whamo! It's like I have a V-8 starter in there now. Good luck!

Got it working, the guy I bought it from had put on a push bottom for both a starter switch and a kill switch. I was simply pushing them arse backwards and after I finally got it straight she fired right up. thanks for all of the suggestions though. The ol mind aint as sharp as it once was
