Securing a large dolphin

Can anyone offer a step-by-step explanation on how to apply this tail rope/head hook contraption? And might this work on other species?

Iím liking the ďjust put him in the boat and let him beat everything to hellĒ method less and less lately. Iíve almost lost my whole bucket of rigs a couple of times now and expensive rods also take a beating in some situations. However, the last thing I want is a dolphin with a 12/0 hook tail roped to him flopping around after Iíve missed the head hook part!

Tail rope a dolphin? You have got to be kidding! Get a good gaff in him and lop him on the head with a bat. Tell your gaff man to take lessons.

1. Open fish box
2. Gaff in the head
3. Directly into box

Gaf him and put him immediately in the box. There's absolutely no reason to have a large fish beating around on deck.

That's how we do it as well. Gaff and in the box. Now if you want to play rodeo go for it!!!!

I saw this done in Costa Rica. that was the first time and the only time that I saw it. Never tried it myself.

My method is get it close to the boat open fish box gaff it and get it in the box. It works until someone forgets the fishbox is open lol. My buddy stepped in the box last weekend and has been pretty sore all week from it

I just happened to see the picture on one of the local charter boatís social media page. I was as awestruck as most of you it seems!

I dunno. I need a chance to go catch one to test out how.

I like to flop em down on the deck and then watch my crew get to stepping.

I caught a cobia to the calf letting a green fish flop around. Biggest bruise I’ve had to date. That sucker pulverized my calf. I beat all big/green fish in the head before bringing onboard. If I’m not keeping them, they don’t come onboard. I have enough pictures of me with fish, not worth the effort for bragging rights.

We do it all the time , usually use the leader to tie them up . But also have a 10/0 hook and small rope that we use . Saves a lot of scrubbing blood out of inconvenient spots in the box at the end of the day .

Dang! Fish rodeo!!

i want to see some one rodeo tail wrap a Cobia! That be cool!

I’ve never done it that way the real estate in the boat is too valuable, especially when the bite is hot. Have the box open and waiting, from the gaff straight into the box.
