Default Thursday 5/9/19 Offshore

Went SE of Cape Lookout in search of dolphin. Boy was that secondary swell in full effect. It was almost like sound chop so we sucked it up and ran 16-18 knots out to the drop.

Tried high speed for for a few miles near the break with no love and put the ballyhoo spread out. After a slow troll we finally found them in 450’-500’ of water. We had a few doubles and triples but only one or two came tight at a time. Ended up 6 of 9 with a nice class of fish.

One bite ripped about 80% of our line off a TLD 25 with no jumps. We thought we had a stud wahoo or tuna on. We slowly gained line with a large circle to port and after a while realized we were hung up on something in 580’ of water. It was disappointing and even more strange. Not sure if we ended up on the bottom or hung on something attached to the bottom but never had this happen before.

We had a productive day even though we wanted a few more. With the SE wind picking up we were happy to head to the hill. We were glad to turn the corner at the Cape and see some smooth water and get back safe.

Hope most of you got your fix this week with the nice weather earlier in the week!

Thanks for the detailed report, Noworries79! Great work catching 6 Mahi-mahi in less than desirable conditions. I hope to venture offshore hopefully this week.

Thanks for sharing your trip. Multiple lines going off is a fun way to get the adrenaline pumping. Good eats this week for sure.
