Default 1987 Viking 48C - SeaNote - $74,900

I am selling SeaNote, a beautiful and well maintained early Viking 48C. The 48C is one of the most sought after early Viking yachts on the market. I have owned for 4 years. I simply do not use the vessel enough to justify keeping her.

She has way too many upgrades and features to list here. Here is why the price is so low. The STBD engine has just 200 hours on a documented $50k complete, out of the boat, rebuild done in early 2016. This engine runs perfect and needs nothing.

The PORT engine suffered a major component failure on just 390 hours in-frame overhaul. Cam follower failed, broke off and damaged the engine. This engine has been removed, torn down and inspected. I do not have the money, time or interest in repairing or replacing this engine. Estimates are $15k to $25k to have this or another engine prepared and installed. Once done, this boat will have two brand new engines.

Market and survey value for SeaNote with two fresh engines is $130,000. Buyer has an opportunity to be fishing and cruising in this well equipped, excellent condition Viking for around $100k total investment.

Propulsion: J&T Detroit 8v92ti(705hp) with 1.5:1 Allison transmission
Generator: Kohler 13kw diesel ~2200 hours
Cruise: 23 mph @1800 RPM / 40 GAL/hr
Top Speed: 31 MPH (no gear)
  • Vessel is located in Long Beach MS
  • Owned free and clear, USCG Documented
  • Will honor 5% broker fee at closing for any broker that brings a buyer
  • Can be shown by appointment
  • More information and details available to serious inquiries
  • NOTE: Tender in the pictures NOT included in the sale

I will try to get some pics of the updated interior this weekend. As mentioned in the ad, there is so much new stuff on this boat I cant simply list everything. Phone call or visit would be best to discuss and answer questions.

For example:
  • carpet - new
  • sound insulation in salon - new
  • LED flat screen - new
  • tinted windows - new
  • all salon furniture and dinette - new
  • SS fridge - new
  • Instant hot water - new
  • 3 central air con units - rebuilt
  • Lavatory floor and walls - new
  • Master stateroom matress, linens, pillows etc - new
  • guest state linens - new
  • all 3 forward deck hatches - new

So, it just goes on and on.

Interested parties should call for details. Goes to broker this weekend.

It's been a month since you were going to post interior pics. That would be a big help to both you and prospective buyers.

UPDATE:

Regarding the port engine -- a few things to keep in mind that will keep the cost down for the buyer to reinstall this engine:
  1. Engine is already removed and completely disassembled
  2. Known (at this time) required parts - block, both exhaust manifolds, cam followers for inboard head, gaskets, etc
  3. This was a very good engine, recently overhauled (2014) and has approx 400 hrs currently (all hours with me as skipper)
  4. MANY components on this engine are either new, reman, rebuilt, or reconditioned. For example (not a complete list):
  • Fuel Pump (new)
  • Raw water pump (rebuilt)
  • Cooling system including tank and cores (reconditioned)
  • Circulation pump (new)
  • Alternator (new)
  • Both turbos (rebuilt)
  • All injectors (reman)
  • cam dampener (new)
  • ALL hoses (high pressure, low pressure, fuel, oil, air, water) ALL NEW silicone and aeroquip
  • All sending units (new)
  • Etc Etc
So this situation is a bit unique. The failed engine is not a worn out POS. This engine suffered a cam follower failure due to either an incorrect setting (injector timing and/or valve lash) or defective cam follower. This engine was running very strong prior to failure. Minimal smoke (normal amount for this engine), smooth throttle up, temp 180 deg under load, excellent oil pressure, and would turn up quickly to 2,400 RPM under full load.

This failure occurred offshore while coming up to speed. Very very unfortunate. We immediately shut down the engine, secured the prop shaft, and 8 knoted home. I have settled with the insurance company on the loss. That is the reason I am willing to sell this very nice boat at this price. After discussions with the family, we decided to sell the large boat and turn our focus to inland waters.

My hope is to sell as-is. If it does not sell soon, I plan to repair/reinstall the engine and relist for $120k. Few late 80's Viking this nice.

NOTE: Outriggers are included with the sale. The center rigger is currently installed. Both outriggers have been removed for restoration. Approx $4,000 worth of new parts purchased from RUPP will be included in the sale. Everything needed to bring the outriggers to like new condition.

UPDATE:

Keep in mind, the STBD engine was removed from boat for approx 90 days (early 2016) to complete a full rebuild/reman restoration of the engine. Over $50,000 worth or receipts, invoices, insurance claim documentation, inspections, photos, and videos come along as evidence of this work. This engine was close to needing a rebuild at the time of failure. This is why the cost was so high on the overhaul. This engine remains in excellent condition and ready for buyers inspection.

The port engine suffered a failure at only 398 hours on in-frame overhaul. The new owner will need to make some decisions on the best approach. Some options include:
  1. RTO - running take out - install a good, used engine and then sell off an extensive list of good used parts from original motor
  2. Repair (new parts) - repair engine using new OE parts
  3. Repair (used parts) - repair engine using good, serviceable used parts
  4. Repair (no parts) - have a machine shop repair/recondition existing parts
  5. Replace engine with quality reman engine (turn in core)

UPDATE: I recently purchased a CORE 8v92 that will be used in the rebuild/repair of our PORT engine. The rebuild will occur over the fall and expect to complete by the end of the year. The boat will remain for sale as-is but clearly once the engine work gets well underway this listing will be modified to reflect these improvements. There is still time to purchase this early example in great condition at significant discount due to the down PORT engine. Time is running out.
