Planning 1st Overnight Trip

If this is in the wrong location, please feel free to move. Iíll try to be as clear as possible. The wife and I are trying to plan our 1st overnight trip! Up till now itís been nothing but day trips. Iím wanting to chart/map out my route via my iPad, so Iím looking for the easiest way to do that. Everything Iíve tried wants to route me over land, but Iím needing a over water route. I know that I can do it on my gps on the boat, but Iíd like to do it on my iPad as well. Iím looking for the nautical distance from my marina to our destination, rough ETA, etc. Is that something out there that will do this?

What GPS do you have on the boat? Both simrad and Garmin units have apps that’s let you create routes, waypoints etc at home on your computer, iPad, phone etc., and then sync them with the onboard unit. There are also a variety of good charting apps available. I’d search the Apple store, since you mention you want to use an iPad.

I use the free navionics app on my iPhone to do rough mapping of routes and distances. I boat in New England between stonington ct and Boston and islands.

Gives me quick feel how far the run from Jamestown out to Block, etc.

dont over think.

Navionics app as mentioned above. That being said, I wouldnít rely on it as my primary plotter.

If you have Garmin chartplotters, "Garmin HomePort" is a download to your computer. Do all your charting, save it, place the SD card in your MFD, and you're golden.

Thanks for everyone’s input. Downloaded Navionics app and it was exactly what I was looking for!
