Default Volvo Penta Question

I have a 280 duo-prop Volvo penta out drive. It has the b3 prop combo on it. I wanted to know if a different b series would fit and what the difference is? I came across a really good deal on a b5 set, I'm assuming that any b series will fit and the numbers are different prop angles? I'm not sure if or how a b5 would effect the boat. My current large prop has a big chunk missing.
Thanks

I don't know too much about outdrives and the numbering formula for the prop sets but it appears the B5 would be 2 sizes different than the the B3 set.

Each prop set has a different pitch so the engine can make the rated max rpm no matter how heavy or light the boat is. Install a set that is too big and the engine will be overloaded. Fuel economy will be bad, it might overheat and could have a short life. Install a set that is too small and the engine will last a long time, fuel economy will be better but you will not be happy with the performance.

Since there is a big chunk missing from the current prop, you can't really determine if the B3 is the right prop or not. Chances are it is the right prop or really close to it.

My suggestion is to get the B3 prop set not the B5.

Default Prop Guide

Here is a link to Volvo's Propeller Guide. I have found it very useful. A different B-Series set of props will fit your outdrive, but your performance could be drastically different. You are supposed to match up the prop set with the correct RPM your motor is rated for at WOT. Hope this helps - Jason

Also, I don't know where your located, but I used Murphy's in Norfolk, VA when I bought my current set. He let me try out a couple different sets until I found a set that performed correctly. I assume most prop shops with rebuilt or used sets in stock would let you do this. Here is a link: http://www.murphyspropellers.com/

you'll add/lose 200rpm with each size jump with duoprops. if your running 3's now i doubt you'd be able to run 5's and get you rated WOT.
