Default Best hotels in Cabo

I read the info on hotels and all are pretty nice. But need input from some of you guys for the fishing side of the vacation. Looking like October for departure. Would like to charter for a day or two. Gonna rent a jeep and explore the rest of the time.

BUGBUSTER,

There are a number of great Hotels in Cabo. I stay at the Hotel Finistera, good value for the money and close to town. Playa Grande is next door and more upscale. Pochos.com for your charters book the Bad Market or Reel Busy.

I second Playa Grande on the ocean and walking distance to town. If you want to charter a pangac [ which I like better] talk to David Urrea on the Mariana. You can find him at the flea market by the fish dock. Say hello to Fernando the bartender at the flea market bar.

We like renting a house in Pedragal, the gated community on the hill beside the marina. Usually works out to be cheaper and keeps the group together. And the views!!! Taxi service to town is very easy and fast. Never been an issue. See cabovillas.com.

But there are a lot of great places.

If you want to fish a panga you will be miles away from the action if you stay in Los Cabos.

www.gorbanks.com is the closet guy to the action. Halloween is a great fishing time.

The Tropicana has normal rooms with a pool, breakfast, free ice, good AC and two large chest freezers for your catch for $80 a nite dbl occupancy. They have jr suites and a couple of bungalows too. This is the best place I know of where the wife is close to the shops and resturants, and you are 5 minute $5 cab ride to the boat. They have a good bar and resturant. Probably only 40 rooms, so reserve a week before the bisbee tournament, and do it now. World series time has good fishing.

You will see more of the good stuff by boat than by car, so I would just bring your golf clubs as this is also a highlight there.

No problema with weather in late October, although it will still be in the middle 80's in the daytime so bring sunscreen. I don't know if I would rent a jeep or car, seriously, and I drive here year round.

Playa Grande is top notch and a fantastic place to stay. Solomar is very close too and is a real nice place. Most likely a little more resonable. Not as nice, and a little older. Plaza Los Glorias is in the town and the rooms are OK. I would not suggest this one if you are taking the wife and she likes 4 star places. Close to town and a lot of local types hang out here. I was to be there on the 4th of Sept. but hotels cancelled us out because of Hurricane John. As stated above make sure you check ahead of time.

RIU Palace for the best in food and luxuries. It is an all inclusive with several resturants to choose from. In room bar - free, all alcohol and drinks are free--premium brands. Top notch all the way. Five minutes from down town.

Fished the IGFA International Championship in May. Stayed at the Hotel Feinestera. First class, inthe middle of everything. You wont be disappointed. Enjoy and good luck fishing. BTW if you need a charter go see Minerva's.

If you wish a great room in the Marina in front of all the boats and Cabo entrance try the new Tosara Hotel, old Plaza Las Glorias rooms only USD $ 90.00 a night, newly revamped and you can walk around all the boats. Cabo Villas, Chris Erickson owner is another, others have given you some already but if you on a budget here are two to look at and both great locations.
If you need some great Captains and boats to Charter let me know ill shoot you a few to choose from, highly recommended.
I will be down the whole month of OCtober, its the busy time in cabo with all the tournaments going on www.bisbees.com this time so hotels and boats are booked up get it done now.

We stayed at the Solmar for our honeymoon October 1-10 1995.........The nice thing is it is one of the few hotels on the ocean....most are on the other side in the marina area. The hotel was very nice but it was a bit "older" then and keep in mind this was 11 years ago. Short 5 min cab ride to town, shopping, marina, bars etc. or about a 15-20 min walk. We visited many other hotels while there and the Solmar seemed the most private, ie quiet..........Personally I would have liked a little more action. We always had the pools hot tubs and beach almost to our selves. The Solmar has a large fishing fleet as well. All the boats are 28-38 foot "older" Bertrams and the like....We chartered them twice and then went with an independent guy on a Panga another day. The fishing was OK by there standards......We caught lots of MAhi and small yellowfin each day and had several shots at Marlin each day.

Don't rent a CJ, get an SUV. We rented a CJ for some exploring northward along the Pacific coast. The highway (2 lanes) is a bit winding and the asphalt is crap. The steering in a new CJ isn't all that great to begin with and this one was well past it's prime. Get something else with 4WD not a CJ.

There's a couple of roads off the highway that lead to beaches. They're generally not paved, just packed sand. It would be best not to go wandering down them with the typical passenger car. You could do it but some of the sections have rather big ruts.

Frankly, we wouldn't bother going back to Cabo. Unless you're going there for fishing or golf it's really not that great a place. There's way too many fat tourists and the beach vendors are incredibly annoying. If you want this sort of nonsense you'd be better just going to Ft. Lauderdale or Cancun.

I stayed in the Westin Regina while there with the wife. A big pink hotel with an arch in the middle. It was very nice and affordable. Watch out on the beach though....We went to Billygan's to eat and the vendors (small kids) were pushing silver on us very hard. They wouldnt leave till we bought some. (had to be nice with the wife there.)

I have many years experince in Cabo (as tourist) and if you are bringing non-fishing family then go to Villla Del Palmar. Bullshipper is right - if you want to fish go to San Jose Del Cabo resorts and be close to Gordo Banks or more remote but my favorite is East Cape ares (Los Barrilles). There, either Palmas De Cortez for family comfort and resort feel or Rancho Leonero for a real fishing vacation. I've rented jeeps and they were the newer TJ's and were a kick in the ass. Load up the cooler and explore East Cape. Bring 12-20 lb setups for fishing the shores and beautiful beaches to swim all all to yourself. Also diving Cabo Pulmo is a blast!

Most resorts in Cabo San Lucas do NOT have beaches you can swim at especially on the Pacific side - steep with nasty surf/rips. The resorts within a mile north of town on the Cortez side are fine and I think it's the Hacienda which has a break wall on the "corridor" is also safe to swim. There's a new resort being built at Chilano Beach (great snorkling) which might be a great one when it's done. Enjoy

We stayed at the Villa Del Palmar and it was nice. The westin regina is way out of town, about halfway between the two Cabos. Be prepared for a lotta cab fare and trip planning if you're at the westin. A friend has a timeshare at the Bonita Rose and it's quite nice.

When dining do NOT miss having dinner at a restaurant named 'Mi Casa'. It's in the western part of town, near Ted Nugent's bar. That and one of there's a cafe at the eastern wall of the marina that does a great job making mexican coffee.

I think you meant Sammy Haggar's bar - Cabo Wabo. Villa Del Palmar, Bonita Rosa and Bonita Blanca are all next to each other and each is fine with good beaches. The list of great restaurant's in the area is to long to list. But at the top for sure is a newer one called "Dustins" - he is the chef (real chef) for Cabo Wabo and Sammy opened up a new place for him. Also Salomon's Landing in Plaza los Glorias is a must stop for lunch for us. Think I'll check the airfare just talking about it!

Better plan your trip when the time is right. The eastern pacific is getting pelted this year with it's share of tropical storms and hurricanes, and Cabo has been hit!
