Default 3.4L Mercurys 25 Open Contender

I sold my 200 hpdis on my 2004 contender 25 open. Time for re-power and the mercury 3.4 are on the top of my list.

Has anyone repowered the 25 open (28 loa) contender with these? I have the option black 225s or cold fusion white 200s.

Either should be a great option on that hull, I'd take the extra 50hp.

Would very much like to see the comparison between the 225’s and HPDI’s on that boat. What were you seeing before you sold the old engines?

that boat is 28’ loa right?

Yes it is 28 loa. I have the extra 60 gallon fuel capacity and isinglass enclosure. Typically keep saddles full and main tank at least 1/2 full. 5300 rpms got me 51mph with a medium load. I cruised in low 30s at 1.8-1.9 mpg

I would guess with the 225's the boat will run 57+ and get 2mpg at 35.

225s would be my choice.

If anyone has bought these recently I am curious on pricing. Feel free to PM me. I knew they were expensive but was a little shocked. All the dealers say the same thing 50 week wait so there isn't any real negotiation. Guess it is a pay to play type of situation!

Someone repowered a Contender 23t with the 3.4l 200's and looks to have great numbers with the set up. Probably somewhat comparable to what you could expect on your hull. Not sure if you've seen this thread already (starting at post #24): Any New V6 Mercs Delivered Yet?

Prices vary depending on where you are at. In my area, western new york, my Mercury v6 200 I have on order was slightly cheaper than a Yamaha i4 200 and a (new) 2017 Evinrude 3.4L G1 200H.O.

I'm shopping right now too, got several quotes for a pair of 225's from south FL, low 40's rigged is what they were quoting me for fly by wire.

Ordered a pair of the 225s for my Contender 27 last October. They were supposed to ship this past Friday. Very excited about losing 180 lbs off my transom. The Mercs were about $7k cheaper than the much heavier F225s.

Thank you all for the information. The prices I am getting are exactly what others are saying. I also received quotes for Suzukis and Yamahas. The Suzukis were about $7K cheaper than the Mercurys. The Yamahas were within a few hundred dollars of the Mercurys.

I decided to go with the black 225s. I will update the thread when the process starts which should be in a few weeks.

Good call on the Mercury's. I think you will be very happy with the package. It s a lot of money, but in a few years you will look back and feel good about your decision.

Yes the black 225s were sitting on the shelf and the white 200s were "going to arrive in 2 weeks". At two different dealers but both are local to me.

Please update this once you finish the repower, and compare to the hpdi’s. Not much info on these 225’s in general and that particular comparison would be a first. It’d be a great community service!
