Default 2005 Yamaha HPDI ?

Considering a center console that has twin 2005 HPDI (LZ200TXRD) motors. Around 800 hrs. Have had 4 strokes on previous boats. Are these solid motors? Any reservations assuming they have been well maintained? Are they any common problems with HDPIs?

Thanks.

Given the age, I am more comfortable with HPDI's than 4 strokes because they have a lower rate of corrosion. They are easy to work on once you understand them and if you blow one you can find a replacement motor on the used market cheap to get back on the water.

I have 1300hrs on 2003 200hpdis. Clean fuel is important. When I first got them they were being run on ethanol fuel and I was having VST issues. Finally switched over to non-ethanol fuel and 2 micron racors, and no more issues in the last 3 years. Took my VSTs apart this year since its been 3 years and they looked almost perfect.

My last boat had a 2001 200 HPDI and my current boat has a 2004 HPDI with about 850 hours. I love the motors but they do take a little effort maintaining the fuel filters, especially the VST filter. But I've run regular pump gas since I've owned them so that's to be expected. Lots of torque and pretty decent fuel mileage. A Yamaha Service Manual is a good thing.

I have had three of these 200Hp motors and like a lot of people say, good clean fuel, change your filters, along with regular 100 hour maintenance and these are good strong motors! My buddy who bought my Pathfinder called me the other day ranting about how he like the motor, stating that it was very fuel efficient! Not bad for 14/13 yr old motors!

Iíve owned four of them. All Ď03ís and Ď04ís. As mentioned good filters and clean fuels and youíre golden! One of the best motors ever made in my opinion, and Iím a four stroke fan!

Great motors but definitely helps to be capable of doing your own work if you need to clean filters etc. It will save you a lot of money. The 200's are pretty economical to run and don't burn a crazy amount of oil like the older 2 strokes.

As other have said- great motors, run clean fuel, you MUST service ALL the filters regularly per time schedule/hour use. The 4 stroke 200 Yamaha only get about 10% better mileage than 200 HPDI on old stye Contender 25/28 vs new style 28 at 4,000 rpm cruise according to my fuel records (old style hull) and current reviews. Ask for an electronic analysis of the motors running WOT to verify that the VST and high pressure pumps are generating fuel pressure within specs. Ask if the high pressure pumps and injectors have been serviced.

Mine had low compression in cylinder # 2 at 900 hrs, which is typically the first to fail

check compression and you buy it, use clean fuel, change filters including mistery filters and run it constantly.
