Default What is this stain?

Removed the cover off my 28' Pursuit CC and immediately noticed some bolster and back rest discoloration.

Here are the facts re the covering and storage.

1. The boat was covered with a black Sunbrella full boat cover. (boat and cover were perfectly dry when covered0.
2. The cover was on for four weeks with temperatures averaging low 80's during the day.
3. The seats at the console have no stains.
4. Just the top of middle seat back rest and top of the aft bolsters have the stain.
5. Prior to now the bolsters and back rest had no staining.
6. All other upholstery is fine.
7. Tried a couple of different cleaners including 3m cleaner/conditioner nothing works.
8. Don't know what to do, the boat is going be covered once again for 6 weeks and the bolsters and back rest are very difficult to remove.

Any explanations or cleaning ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like it could be the dreaded "pink stain." Sometimes associated with sweat and sunblock transfer & bacteria.

Here's a little light reading:

Have you tried Hydrogen Peroxide? Try regulating H2O2 first. It removes blood protein stains.

One of the links in that search has a description similar to teeth bleeching. You might try some teeth whitener paste. A type of non-chlorine bleeching agent. Rub it on and leave it sit.

The cover has interior support poles, it was well above the back rest and bolsters.

When I first took the cover off the stain was brown almost like rust. It became a little pinkish after I tried to clean it.

My Shearwater vinyl did something similar. Within the first of year of owning the boat (from new), the vinyl became sticky in direct sun, then it discolored, eventually turned almost a gold-ish color, then the discolored layer peeled off. I have been told that it was "defective" vinyl and my cushions are currently being replaced.

The stains get stranger!

After sitting in the sun for a day the stains have almost disappeared.

I don't think its the dreaded pink. The vinyl looked almost burnt to dark brown when I took the cover off, now they are just a slight bit discolored.

I have seen it before and it from the heat of the sun on the dark canvas. The discoloration is especially bad when the canvas is touching the vinyl. I don’t know why, but it does fade away after a few days. From my experience, it will gradually get worse. I would suggest using some old sheets and cover your vinyl to insulate it from the radiant heat.
