Default Rigging a Flying Fish

i have done a search on here and on the internet and could not find what i am looking for. I would like to rig a flying fish for trolling. i can rig the hook just fine, but looking for some help on rigging the wings so that they remain open. will also use them on the kite. thanks in advance.

obviously cannot have wings open for trolling
but for kite...get a long piece or 2 of copper rigging wire and attach to end of wing, run thru eyes to other wing.
And you'd want to hook it in the dorsal so u can pop it in and out of water.

Ive never attempted anything like this but I cant see why it wouldnt work when the flying fish are thick with a natural flyer and throw a few more baits in your spread too.

you are right, i suppose the only flying fish that can be trolled is a plastic one.

Actually they can be trolled just fine. Over in Liberia they were very effective and pin rigged just like a ballyhoo pulled behind islanders. When the wind wasn't blowing the local bait guy in his dugout ganoe would bring fresh caught flying fish and ballyhoo to the boat every morning, both were deadly!

A rubber band rigged from wing through the eye socket to the other wing works. The key is using a well preserved flyer. did it many times YEARS ago. for kite flopping . they troll just like mullet when rigged with a chin weight wings clipped.

to be clear, i meant they cannot be trolled well with the wings extended.

One of the coolest things I've been a part of was catching a wahoo off the kite with a flying fish that landed in the boat while we were overnighting. I didn't rig it, though, so no help from me.

They can be rigged and trolled with the wings out. That is our primary bait for trolling through the ocean because they do not wash out as easy as a ballyhoo in our sea conditions. We take light cotton cord and make an overhand knot just behind the wings then cross and make another just infront the wings. Continue up towards the nose and make a slit across the nose which will close the mouth onto the leader. One more knot on the leader to finish off. Medium super chugger infront and in the outrigger it goes. Will take a picture next time I rig one.
