Default Launching - Do you unplug your trailer lights?

I have noticed people disconnecting their trailer lights when launching, Is this really necessary?

Usually done to keep the lights from being "hot" and in the water, I think??? Also if you have an actuator brake system and disconnect the trailer you will not be able to back down unless you manually lock-out the brake system.

Opinions vary of whether it is necessary. I do not unplug mine because I am likely to forget to plug them back in when I get on the road.

Have el-cheapo trailer lights. I unplug mine. Seals go to rat@#$ too quick to trust em on what I've got. Easier to just hook it up as a 'on the way to the tow vehicle' job.

Never have and never had a problem with "hot bulbs". Of course I load and unload so dammed fast that they don't stay on but a second.

I unplug my trailer before backing into the water. Just takes a few seconds. I don't have LEDs and have had a couple of problems with bulbs blowing out when hot and entering the water. Don't for a second believe all the hype about waterproof lights, there has to be somewhere for the wires to get in touch with the light fixtures. By the way, even with surge brake lock-outs and disc brakes, you can "back" down the ramp without being plugged in, you just can't do it on level land, the trailer will shudder and the truck will not go anywhere. Don't ask me how many times I have found this out.

I do it. Yes, I have to backup slowly so my surge brakes don't try to stop me.

For bulbed lights:

A loose lens will flood the light cavity, maybe a hot bulb will break-maybe not, but the water will short the bulb connector and trace back to blow your trailer light fuse. No amount of grease will ultimately protect the bulb seat when submerged with voltage applied (backup lights, brake lights, license plate light). A simple unplug will save bulbs and/or fuses. Trust me, I know.

never have...20 years of dunking trailers after long drives, short drives, cracked lenses, you name it, i've had it....i have never had a fuse blow or a bulb filament break....guess i'm just lucky... now, i have had issue with corrosion on skinned wires and faulty grounds at the coupler and bulbs corroding in the seat, but unplugging won't help that...

If you unplug trailer and have surge brakes the trailer will not allow you to backup. So lights stay on.

cajunjimbo- you need to spread some of that trailer light luck around. Since I've been driving I've always had trouble with trailer lights.

I used to have bulbs, I unplugged them to for the above posted reasons. I still had problems with them.

My new trailer came with LED lights, I unplug them before splashing. I still have problems with them.

I have trailer light anti-luck.

I don't unplug mine.

But.... I have disc brakes. If I unplug the trailer harness the brake override solenoid does not engage, and you cannot back up. Without time for the lights to cool down (e.g. back up to edge of water, unplug, slip into neutral for the final "dunk") it doesn't help anyway.

I've been doing it this way (plugged in) for five years now without a problem..... if they blow out, then they get replaced. I've only had to replace one set of trailer lights - I figure that's not bad for saltwater use.

I have always unplugged mine, why? Because my Dad told me to...and he was the smartest man I ever met.
