Question 2017 Mercury 150 Four Stroke Ceased after 8 hrs

Brand new total 8 hours on a 24ft tritoon. Was running at around 1500 RPM and all of a sudden alarm went off and the engine ceased. Appears to be metal shavings in the oil, no codes were thrown. Anyone have suggestions on what the issue may be? I have contacted Merc and they are reviewing.

If the engine ceased, you definitely got a problem. Hopefully, Mercury will stand behind an engine ceasing.

We have a 2015 Merc 150 on a tri-toon and it has been flawless aside for the alternator quitting at the end of this season -- which was replaced under warranty.

I think there were a few blocks that made it out with metel shavings in them. There was another thread here recently with a blown powerhead caused by metal shavings. Could be the same issue.

This is what? The second Merc 150 in the last three weeks?

Just to confirm... metal shavings in which oil? Lower unit or engine oil? What was the oil level before the failure?

More than likely metal shavings are the result of a problem. That is, the shavings are probably not the cause of the problem. Only a symptom.

If the block has failed you will get a new one from Mercury. Pretty straight forward. Most any company will do exactly the same thing.

Sh1t happens. It is called life.

The greater the number of Mercury four strokes that enter into service the greater the number of problems that we are going to be hearing about them. It means virtually nothing.

4x4 poster already has a new powerhead, he'll probably report back shortly, Mercury took care of him!

Not the first, won’t be the last. Mercury will take care of the issue, no doubt. Shavings left over from the production/machining process likely wiped out a crank bearing.

I’ve had Suzuki’s, Yamahas, and Mercs. Mercs warranty always impressed me most. I never had an issue whatsoever and it was FAST, no questions.

Engine oil dip stick had shavings. Oil level was full I think I have only put 9 hrs on it and they said the oil was full when they delivered the boat
