FSR Fiberglass stain remover in the best. It is kind of like a gel consistancy. Wear glasses and gloves! Wipe on and let sit for a few minutes and wipe off. That simple. Let us know what you end up using and how it works for you

after removing rust from lets say a bow rail connection to the gunnel, is it a good idea to put some silicone around the connector? i have some small rust stains forming in areas like that.

Bar Keepers Friend works great on rust or any stains period. It's about $3.00 at your local supermarket.

West Marine makes a great spray-on rust remover.

As a novice boat owner, I decided the best way to get oxidation off the deck and gunwhales was to use steel wool - the results should have been predictable... Note to self: steel wool is not spun; rather it is comprised of (seemingly) millions of tiny steel fibers that rust instantaneously...

Point is, I bought and tried virtually all the products listed above with pretty much zero success until I used naval jelly which is a semi-solid acidic (muriatic?) compound. Worked well with copious amounts and scrubbing (rough plactic pad this time). Good luck!

steve55, Barkeepers Friend didn't work? I've never come across a stain it couldn't remove so far.

Next time use BRONZE wool.

I vote for FSR or Barkeepers friend.
Be careful with the muratic acid products. Even the watered down rinse off residue will tarnish some metals.

A good followup might be whether there is a way to remove the rusty colored hull oxidation while the boat is on a galvanized trailer WITHOUT having to fool around with -plastic sheeting for the trailer? On Off takes cleans the hull instantly but must be brushed on and any drops on the trailer attack the galvanizing. I have not tried the gel which would minimize drips and have also wondered if having a second person keeping the trailer sprayed off would solve the issue?
