Best boat wax / polishing compound..
Hello! What do you think what is the best polishing compound and boat wax for salt water?
|
I tried Smoove for the first time this past spring. Really happy with the results
|
McGuire's Flagship marine wax for general cleaning / polish.
Anything 3M for compounding / cutting. But what do I know I bought a Bayliner :jk: :bashhh: As a nice pro tip to those shopping , at least the West Marine near me and I believe all West Marine locations will match Amazon pricing  |
I like presta products.
|
I have found that Woody Wax is essential for the stainless steel. However I have also found the Woody Wax soap to be "meh". I personally like 3M marine products but I have not tried very many different brands out there.

You will get a million opinions on here, as most have their favorites based on their personal experience. In addition this has been discussed at least one million times before, so do a search for some very exhaustive opinions. That being said, I have had great experience with Presta cutting crème for the compound. It comes in two grits depending on the condition of your gel coat. Collinite is one of the most recommended pure wax products. Make sure you use the paste wax #885. It lasts at least 6 months, and if the hull has been cleaned/prepped properly will produce a great shine. I second Smoove wax. Used it for the first time this summer and it worked very well. I don't believe it lasts as long as the Collinite, but it was a good one step product. By the way, fresh or salt water makes no difference. |
Per this websites recommendations I tried a few and I like the Collinite Fleetwax - Seems good to me.
I fish saltwater but the boat is trailered. |

Listen, it's tough to come on here and advise without coming off as a salesman. Don't think of it as a salt water vs. freshwater thing. Protection is protection, regardless of environment (with some exceptions like tanic staining, salt water corrosion of stainless, etc). Think of compounds as corrective chemicals, and waxes/sealants (and our Pro Polish, which is a bit of a misnomer) as protective chemicals. I like to keep them separated as the protection seems to last longer with a dedicated protective chemical, in my experience. Find something you like, use it often, and your boat will look good for years to come.

if your hull has oxidation the Procut 2000 will remove it and polish your hull in one application. Top it off with popular sealant of your choice. Smooves sealant is good, I've also had good luck with Nufinish. |

I was very happy with Feldten gel coat sealant. Put in on in the fall and spring. Easy to apply and held up great.

I used this for the first time this year and I am sold. I have a black hull and it was oxidized pretty good. I used this stuff with a rotary buffer and wool pad @ 1800 rpms and it shined the boat up like a new penny. I was very impressed. I used a few wool pads. I kept rinsing them out and fluffing them up a screw driver. I finished up with Collinite wax. She sure looked good when I put her to sleep for the winter. |

why wool instead of foam?

We’ve used various Presta products and our clients have liked the results. Their creme wax holds up well and they offer various grades of compound compounds to remove oxidation. Farecla products have worked well for us. SMS Marine Products is a distributor for both. |
For pure wax Collinite 885 from the Can is hard to beat, I put 3 coats on my hull every Spring and I really don’t need to do anything else. |
Collinite paste wax for sure is the way to go in terms of durable protection. I too have been a big fan of Meguires Polish and have been a 3m guy for compounds. Have been too cheap to oull the trigger on the 3m Finesse polish but may this spring. Once nice tip i picked up overs the years was that cleaner waxes are nice to “touchup” any black streaks from snaps etc. in between major cleaning/polishing. Ive got a couple dofferent brands and all work equally well. |
I've been using Marine 31 Gel Coat Final Step Polish, then Marine 31 Gel Coat Carnauba Wax , both with a Flex polisher machine and foam pads for three years now. Excellent products.

Aqua Buff 2000 to polish then Collinite 920 then the 925 wax (I do two coats of the wax, especially on the south facing side of the hull). I've tried 3M and Presta, have them both in my "boat supply" cabinet, they're good, but I like the Aqua Buff best.

I recently did a study with boaters to identify the best boat waxes and you can see the results here. However, didn't have enough sample to look at saltwater boaters exclusively. But, as many have suggested here, the Collinite Fleetwax was highly rated. Meguiars is also very popular. One thing to consider, however, is that the synthetic waxes (sometimes referred to as "polishes" which is confusing) will last longer than an ordinary Carnauba wax.
Also examined the best cleaning products. |

Their Supercut Compound is awesome. Cutting Creme is an excellent compound/polish mid and Chroma Polish is excellent also. I use all of them in my business. However, their “Gel Coat Compound” was disappointing and I don’t recommend it. Use the supercut instead. Brian Restoration Boatworks Their pads are great too and well priced. |
Another Presta fan.
OP read post #3 in this thread. You'll learn a lot regardless of the products you choose. Seems like most of the boat detailers use Presta or 3M products to compound/buff/polish, with Collonite most recommended for wax. |
