Sailboats also sometimes have props where the blade will collapse when not running - to reduce drag. Might let you get it closer to the hull without a pocket.

folding props,... they have just about no reverse.

Go back a hundred years in history and they were common in some areas (mostly Canadian)
”Commuter boat” had one with the power dorys used in the Canadian maritimes.
Also look up “Dispro boats” from the lakes area of Canada.
Both used low speed make and break type engines.
