Default Mercury 250xs no start-good battery

My brother in law has a haynie bay boat with a 250 merc. We changed a bad solenoid for the jack plate today. Reinstalled everything and we thought it was all good. Put it in the water and it clicks then goes dead. Let the mercury monitor reboot and we might have power to the trim and it operates perfectly. Go to start and it clicks then goes silent. We can’t find any shorts but something is happening

Any ideas? Batteries are good and changed to be sure.

one time when I put the cowling back on my Merc 150 efi I somehow got the fuel pump electrical connection disconnected by the front pin of the cowing. Simple but sounds like what you are describing. Hope it is that simple...

Sounds like a loose ground.
