Default Mercursier 4.3l shifting issues

I have a 2005 bayliner 185 runabout with 4.3l mercuriser. Have been having issue with shifting from forward to neutral. It will stay in forward and I have to go towards reverse to disengage it. Also will not go into reverse at time. Problem is it is not consistent. I just took it to boat launch and was trying to get it to mess up but it shifted every time. I had a guy replace cable from engine to outdrive last month to fix this issue. It did not correct it. Wasted about 2k. It is getting very difficult to load boat or pull up to dock. Thank goodness the water is a lake and current is not an issue. Just a lot of waves. HELP!!

I've seen a similar situation where one of the bolts on the plate that pivots where the shift cables attach was stripped. Everything looked good, but when the gears were shifted, the plate would move a little bit because the bolt wasn't holding, and the shift was off. Check that pivot bolt, might be your problem.

Other than an adjustment of the shift interrupter, has the cable from the control to the engine been replaced or is it original? They tend to stretch causing similar issues.

Here's a section on troubleshooting shift problems.

Anyone check or adjust base timing recently?? Shift interrupter has to be disconnected to shoot timing. Perhaps they didn't re-connect it??
