Default Mercury Help Please

1999 Mercury 225 Optimax

Boat has been sitting a bit during the offseason. Hooked up today and she fired right up. Let her idle on muffs about 30 minutes going in and out of gear and everything appeared to be fine.

To the boat ramp we go. Launched 25 minutes through the idle zone and everybody hold on. Drop the hammer.....nothing. oh boy.

Basically the motor idles fine and even runs at a fast idle fine but if you try to plane out it bugs down. Does not shit off, no alarms, but will not plane. Just starts spitting and sputtering.

Plan to replace plugs and racer filter first. Anything else to verify you guys would suggest?

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a switch pack but it could be many things. Best advice I can give is to go through the troubleshooting procedures in the factory manual. It's a PIA but unless it's something simple/obvious it will likely save you time and money in the long run.

I'm hoping others chime in and can help also. Last time I ran the boat it ran like a dream. So like I said I'm hoping it something simple

When was the last time the engine was maintained? Spark plugs, fuel filters, etc.?

Filters, plugs and plug wires. First things on the check list.

If it idles fine but bogs down when you ask for power I'd be looking at fuel delivery first off.

Fuel filters are cheap, easy and should be replaced regularly regardless of engine performance.

Could be the TPS, throttle position sensor. It might think its in neutral and wont allow higher revs.

End of 2016/Begining of 2017. Impeller, foot/gear oil, plugs, plug wires and fuel water seperator

But sad to say we do not use the boat as much as we hoped. It hasn't been used in about 7 or 8 months before yesterday. We did run it on muffs periodically to try and prevent this from happening though as we know sitting boats equals things breaking

it idles fine and will even run fine when you bump it up alittle. When you mash the throttle the RPMs jump and the boat attempts to jump and plane off but immediately starts gurgling, spitting and sputtering bogging all the way down.
