Default johnson 225 ocean pro problems

I've got a 1998 johnson 225 ocean pro that quits running as soon as you let go of the key after it starts as long as you hold the key to start it will keep running! I need help please?!?!

Sound very likely the stator. You can pull the fly wheel and make sure the magnets are attached. Also if the stator shows sign of "melting goop", this is another indicator of stator failure. CDI electronics for trouble shooting tips

Had a 1995 175 Johnson that did that. It was the Ignition Switch.

I had a '98 200hp 'Rude that had a similar problem. The ignition wiring harness went bad. New BRP one cured it, about $900 installed.

if you do have to pull the fly wheel off make sure you have a bigger torque wrench if I remember correctly but is re torqued to 170 ft lbs..and wouldn't hurt to check magnets they are notorious for coming loose
