Default who can tell me what causes an explosion and vibrates boat?

My boyfriend is a fisherman on a 100 ft dragger down in New Bedford, MA. I went down to visit and on New Years day, I had left the boat for only a few minutes. When I got back, as I was walking across the dock to get back on the boat, there was a very loud boom. It sounded like an explosion had happened on the boat. The entire boat shook and it blew a light cover off from the top of the mast. After much inspection and searching for the cause, we found the base of the mast had cracked and sprayed black water all over the deck and walls. The splash patterns came directly from the mast and were in an upward splash pattern. The scariest and most bizarre thing anyone on the boat had experienced. We assumed there was leak and caused ice to build up and the pressure made it cave. Has anyone experienced or heard of this happening before? Curiosity is killing me!

First thought is lightning. I could probably get more specific if you posted a pic.

There was no lightning. I unfortunately don't have any pictures of it, It was just bitter cold, but otherwise clear skies and minimal wind even. The crack went all the way around the mast, was not a "clean" crack, but was fairly even. I'll see if I can get my boyfriend to send me the pictures he took.

Actually, you can have lightning in clear sky conditions.

sounds like some sort of gas (or waste) built up in the wiring chase and rats ate through a wire and the gas ignited causing an explosion, JMO. Was Myth Busters on board??

I've seen a lot of things cracked by ice inside, always a slow expansion. A lot more details and yes pics would be needed to begin forming a guess.

Agree with the ice theory.

there was no one around, and the ice was still intact on sides of boat. it was something from on the boat, and only 2 people were on it while i was standing outside of it. I guess explosion was the wrong description to use, but that's what it sounded like. no sparks, no fire.

She's writing from Maine. It's January. This is probably the pic you can expect:

I've asked my boyfriend to forward pics he took, will share when I get them. that was our best guess, a leak inside the mast that froze.

the boom sounded like an explosion, the whole boat shook, but it was like a vibration not rocking motion. it all stopped as quick as it began. mast was still intact, and took us a few minutes to notice the crack. it blew away some of the paint and it was definitely where the splash pattern on the walls and ceiling came from. they were able to just cock it with silicone to head out for a trip, but definitely needs a closer look when they get back

Sorry you're so sensitive.

The force of expanding, cooling ice is incredible. Parent metal crack or at a weld?

But slow, and metal is ductile, even at very low temps. Unlikely the mast was made of anything but aluminum or steel. Ice could block a vent that is there to prevent pressure buildup and explosion, or to vent explosive gas, so the ice could have been a factor. If there was a big crack, like the mast had moved when ice cracked it enough, that would be another possible ice-related theory.

If they sealed it up with silicone, is the mast intended to hold water or gas? Why would they need to seal it before going out? Is this an exhaust stack that looks like a mast from below?
