Strange Tach issue

Default Strange Tach issue

Need the THT brain trust assistance - working on the boat today, I was using an oscillating multi-tool to cut a hole in the console. The area I was working in was about 5 inches from the Teleflex tach, which was working fine. As I was cutting, I noticed the tach needle jumping around, and when I finished, the needle was at 6000 or so, with power off. It did not reset to zero as it normally does when ignition is switched on, and when I took the boat out, the needle moved as expected with engine speed, just with the needle in the '4 to 9 o'clock' area of the dial.

It looks like the vibration of the tool knocked the tach needle out of alignment - that much is clear. No luck in finding a similar problem on the Interwebs - does anyone know if there is a way to recalibrate/ reset the needle position, or am I looking at a trashed unit?

I believe a magnet held next to the needle can sometimes haul it back to 0 position.
No wires going past that spot got nicked, right?

Not sure about what caused the needle to move but you should be able to use a jewlers screw driver through the back of it to re-calibrate. Look on the back for a hole around the 10:00 position. I don't know if that's typical but it seem to me that I'm remembering a teleflex issue. You might want to be most concerned about the running rpms and use a tach to do the calibration.

I just looked, you should definitely be able to calibrate from the back of the unit. Ps. Thanks google.
