Copying a 31 Bertram in Quepos Costa Rica
Well it's been about a year since we've done something crazy, so I figured I'm not getting any younger and better get started! I love our Gamefisherman, and almost did a cold molded wood boat, but every tournament i see it's the wood boats, the foam boats, and then a dang 31 foot Bertram up there in the top. I have to see if there is something to this, so if the hull is smooth and raises fish while they are heavy, how much better would they do if we could build one that weighed half! So, I called in a favor and have one month to do what i want with this boat. My friend is headed to Brazil and says I can do as I please, as long as his boat is ready to fish by June first. Sounds like a challenge to me! Here's the boat:

So in typical fashion, as soon as we started to put it on the trailer, we got a torrential rain :)

But we stuck with it, got soaked and here she is on the trailer!

Earlier today this happened:

That is 60 sheets of 1 inch and .75 inch divinycell. This is going to be fun!

The first goal is to clean this boat up, take all the running gear off, and then we are going to wax it about 6 times, 4 coats of PVA and we want to make a mold of it. Once the mold is done, we have to clean it up, put it together, paint the bottom and the antislip on the floor and give it back to my friend who is in Brazil until the 1st of June.

After i give the boat back we start seeing how we can make one of these things. i don't want to loose the classic lines, I have always felt like this was the 69 camaro of boats. You just can't change it or it looses the magic. So it has to LOOK the same, but I want to make it lighter, faster, and stronger. We are going to do the hull in all 1708 glass, nice vinylester resin, thick bottom, thin sides. All the top side will be built with the diviniyCell coring. Twin cummins 210hp 6BTs for longevity and gas mileage. Lightweight ZF 65A trannys. I'm thinking of building two fuel tanks (One big tank with a division). front part of the tank will be 80 gallons which we always leave full for day trips, and then the back part we will have 220 gallons so if we want to make a run to the FADS we can fill the whole thing up. We are going for AC, a generator, bed up front, couch on the inside. It'll be fun.

Here's the goal:

Here's another cool one, I'll probably stick with the colors above, but this one really caught my eye! I'm not going to do the wood though.

Cool, well that's what I have for today. Monday and Tuesday are Costa Rican holidays, so we are going to hit it on Wednesday and see if we can get this thing ready to copy!

Fishizzle!.......watching this to the end John. Awesome! really thinks you need 260 a side, use a bladder for the FADS, just my .02......

You are a glutton for punishment.

This was just done and the molds were for sale for a song in the past few months for $20k so something cheap like that.

It was called the Nassau 3204.

Can't beat the old classics for sure

This looks like it's going to be amazing!

SailFishQuepos 04-29-2017 06:08 PM

Very cool. That is funny the link with the company trying to sell these. Mine will not be for sale. i want to build it, and then I want to fish it forever :)

This is kind of Ad hoc boat building, our fishing grounds are only 15-30 miles from the dock so other bertrams, like the one I am copying, are burning about 50-60 gallons a day total on day trips. This one will burn a little less. So I am assuming 80 is more than we will need. I may chicken out and do a 100 in the partition, yeah that sounds like a good idea, so we have more leeway. I can bring out a bladder, or maybe just a plastic 55 gallon drum :roll for the FAD trips. I'm not sure I'm super interested in FAD trips, but that might change. I'm on the fence. A light weight 31 footer could get there for about half what the bigger boats are charging, and would catch just as many fish. i wonder if there are people that would want to do that? I know my captains would be up for it!

On the FAD trips, the way it's done here is leaving out at night and trolling all night to get to the FADS, then fishing two days, and trolling home the last night. That keeps the fuel burn and price of the trip down so more people do it. The bigger boats, 40-45 footers, are burning right 300 gallons, so I was thinking that we could do the same. My main issue is the tank and where it goes. I'm scared if I make it bigger than original it will offset my balance of the boat. Maybe that is a mute point with using the foam core, but also that is just where the tank goes. And i believe the original is 280 gallons, so that how big the space is, that's how much i get.

I LOVE ideas though, now is time before I get started. Everybody throw everything out there and I'll see what I can use!!!!

Kinda like my last project, this isn't a for sale boat, it's just for me and it's main goal will be to fish here in front of Quepos. I plan on fishing this one until the props fall off, and then buying new props and doing it again! :)

Anybody have any ideas on what the smallest diesel generator is?

captbone 04-29-2017 06:23 PM

Sounds great. Your other threads were amazing.

I can't do the single diesel on this one :) Just a straight up copy, I need a twin engine boat with AC anyways! :)

Attachment 815088 You could always just do this one & save a bunch of time?

HTJ 04-29-2017 07:05 PM

Great project:thumbsup:

With lightweight at least some portion of your goal, and "only" packing 2 x 210 power....would you consider building it as an express? An express 31 Bert has been a long time pipe dream of mine, but with a pair of 330's:grin:

Big Iron 04-29-2017 07:52 PM

Hell yeah. Been waiting for this.

Ragtop409 04-29-2017 08:21 PM

That trailer has me a little scared. But I can't wait to see you build this machine!!! Rag's
