Default New and improved Ulterra iPilot

Well, got a call from trollingmotors.net yesterday saying the 2017 Ulterra was now available. Minn Kota is calling it the Riptide Ulterra for the saltwater version and it is supposed to have the new and improved Spotlock and also the jog feature along with a new remote and bluetooth capability for use with a smartphone app. Apparently, MK is using an additional GPS receiver that mounts somewhere else in the boat to achieve a tighter spot lock Needless to say, I ordered one and it is supposed to be delivered Monday. I had previously sold my "non Ulterra" iPilot in anticipation of this model coming out. Time will tell if it is all it's supposed to be.

Yes, I got it yesterday, but when I tried to use the mount I had purchased from R&R Design, it would not fit so R&R graciously sent me a UPS return and I shipped it back to them today. I also ordered a sliding mount from MK that is supposedly compatible with the new Ulterra, but that item is backordered. Long story short, I won't be able to install it for a week or so. In reading the instructions, it certainly appears it will be super and much more capable than my old iPilot. One thing I could not find in the instructions (even in the online manual) was how to deploy and stow, but I'm assuming that will show up on the remote once I get it installed and it pairs with the remote. I thought the remote would have a special key(s) for that, but since the trim feature is in the menu screen, I'm assuming that is where those other commands will be. Will post when I have more to report.

BTW, it doesn't use an additional GPS receiver, the extra item is a "heading sensor" which is supposed to improve the performance. Allegedly, the refined spot lock and jog feature is due to an improved GPS receiver in the head and some software algorithms that were improved also.

Does that mean MK is shipping them to all dealers?

I'm curious what you will think when you get the minn Kota mount, compared to the R & R. I went with an xi5 and sent back the MG mount, ordered the R & R and did some modifications to make it install the way I wanted. Brian at BG Marine told me a lot of MG purchasers us the MK brackets in their installations.

I'm not sure that I could have modified the R&R to fit because it was just not wide enough to fit the base of the Ulterra mount. I would have had to drill new mounting holes in the base of the Ulterra to make it work which would necessitate having to completely dismantle the Ulterra. We'll see how the MK mount fits when I receive it.

I'm interested in this thread also, getting either a new Ulterra or Terrova, need I-Pilot. Curious where most people are mounting the heading sensor for I Pilot? It is going on a Triton 240lts.

Just ordered a new custom boat build starts in Jan and going with the Ulterra; I hope the new improvements fix the problems.

I should have one by Monday and will report back. I was on the fence with the Ulterra and Terrova as well. The Ulterra just seems to cool not to get.

Glad to hear they are shipping. I sold my Ulterra 72 as soon as I heard a new better model was coming out. Looking forward to hearing the spot lock reviews. I have had a few Ipilots. The spot lock was spotty at times! Hopefully they nail it with this unit. New remote looks cool TOO!
