Default Anchor Rode - Don't let me make a mistake again...

I purchased a bulk spool of anchor line from the following ebay seller and thought I was getting a great deal.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-2-x-300-Ny...oAAOSwgjhVJBEB

Upon arrival I noticed it was a little softer than my previous rode, but I shrugged it off and spliced it to my chain... Now the rope gets jammed up in my Lewmar windlass about every other time I go out. Sometimes it gets so jammed that I need to return to dock and take the windlass apart to get things free.

I'm fed up with it and have made up my mind to purchase a replacement line, but I want to make sure I am getting a decent product this time. What do you guys think about New England anchor lines? I'm considering buying this: http://www.starmarinedepot.com/new-e...250-nylon.html

Thanks a bunch for your opinions!

I purchased the chain an rode kit from anchorlift pre spliced and it was the best 300 bucks I ever spent. Have not had a single jam since.

Does your windlass have a clutch? Have you tried messing with the settings yet?

Lewmar has specific rode they recommend for their products.

Why not just buy that and be sure?

^ this

I bought from anchorlift because they made my barracuda windlass. I may have paid 100 bucks more buying directly from them but you can't put a price on trouble free operation. Buy the one recommended by the manufacturer and save yourself from having to go through this for a third time.

Don't need the chain. Already have plenty of G4 from my current setup that I want to splice on a new line.

Thanks!

The ebay ad says it's medium/soft laid. Wrong stuff for a rode, and wrong stuff for a boat in general.

Cheap Chinese crap.

To answer your question, New England Ropes makes a premium product and you will not regret the purchase.

Does your Lewmar manual by any chance suggest use of 8-plait line? It works best with many windlasses.

I always buy from here: http://cableloft.com/anchor-rodes.html

"quick ship anchor rode" is what I get, good stuff. Price is right, quality is good.

8 Plait is by far the best for use in a windlass. Reccomended by all manufacturers.

Most recommend both that and 3 strand .

Did you soak it before feeding it to the windlass ? ( see your windlass/rode instructions )

On eBay, there is a seller - SecoSouthRigging. You will find what you need there, for the best price AND the best quality. (It is cheaper on eBay than on their own site).

Pretty sure it's not made in China. I purchased the same rode recently but have not tried it in the water yet. I DID notice that it had an incredible amount of twist in it. And I had spliced it to the chain and attached it to the boat before I realized how much twist. Took quite a bit of work to untwist. We'll see how it works. Won't be the end of the world if it doesn't work.

Windlass is great. I'll let you know once I've done more than lunch-hook for the chain combo... the real hard-core people would tell you that 30' of chain isn't enough... but I'm going to integrate a bridle and I think we'll be fine.
