Default Play In Steering Helm

Hey Guys

I have a Seastar 2.0 classic tilt helm on my 23 Bluewater. There is a lot of play in the steering wheel which is getting aggravating. I pulled the steering wheel off yesterday and the shaft can easily be moved around. Is this something that can be repaired or am I better of replacing the helm?

Make sure it has plenty of fluid in it and no air. If it needs to be repaired there is a place you can send it to, search on here for it. Those helms are pretty expensive new. The problem could be at the motor end.

If you are talking about side to side movement,There is a bushing around the shaft that wears out on the older ones.Don't know if you can get parts to repair it or not.The newer ones have had a design change from what I understand.

I understand the parts are no longer available from Seastar. Mine had more play than I felt was reasonable so I took it apart over the week end. After inspection, I' deemed mine safe but it made me uncomfortable with so much play. The bushing inside my housing was worn. I found a reasonable replacement at a hydraulics, fluid repair shop. It iis a Bronze Oilite sleeve that was .75 id. .875 od. And I think 1 1/4 in long and cost all of $1.92. This really tightened it up. Not perfect but great improvement. If you don't like this idea you can get a tilt assembly replacement from Seastar for about $250.00.
