If I were buying new. Anywhere from trip 350's to quad 400's. Just depends how fast you want to go and how much coin you want to spend. I will say, my quad 350 38' was my favorite 38 to date.

A 38 with quad 400s should keep you in the conversations for awhile. May have to grow some bigger stones to run it wot : )

We had the offshore races off Jupiter few years back. Watching the enclosed cockpit fountain run the course gave me a whole appreciation for what people call the beak. The entire design is go fast. Loved my 38 but didn't have enough days to run it the speeds it likes. Was a hell of a ride. Built well and the new ones are sweet. Gets on top and runs faster than a yf by a bit. Doesn't suffer as mu chance to load either.

I love my 38 Fountain, fun boat, but you have to drive it. Just wish I could put Quad Verado 400Rs on it....

Was told the 38LX Transom wont handle Quads....

Plus the small fact of $120,000+ for the quads...

C'mon guys, it's been proven many times on THT that NO boat can run 30+ MPH in a 3 ft chop let alone 70 ++!

Great vids everyone.

Everybody keeps saying you have to drive it. Or the wrong operator makes it ride poorly, etc. What specifically do y'all mean? In particular, what trim does it like in 3-4s? And what speed? Do you have to constantly work the throttles?

I "like" to drive it, others hate it. It can keep you busy. You have to work the throttles a little bit (not too much), but it is much more about knowing how to set engine trim and then working the k-plane trim tabs and then really going fast enough to get up on the pad and on top of the waves. The LX doesnt jump up on the pad until about 52 MPH. So you also have to be careful around other boats, you can run up on them in a hurry. I have had a lot of boats (mostly smaller), but this is one boat that is safer and handles better, the faster you go.

Engine Trim - run at 3 - if below 37 MPH, run at 5 between 40 - 50, start to trim at 6 to 7 around 60 - 65 MPH. Kplanes, down to start, 3 neutral through 50, 2 at 52 and above. And then adjust kplane for wind, waves and people on board.

With the cc:

Trim the motors.up.some to.delete the negative trim angle. Drop the tabs even with the running surface, then drop the windward tab just a touch below the surface. In 3's. This is usually 2 on the trim gauge, and leeward tab at 3, windward tab at 4.,.

In 1-2's, trim at 4-5, and windward tab at 3, leeward tab at 2.5.

Speed? Just depends on how fast u want to go. I like to run whatever is comfortable. In Gulf 3-4' that's around 28-35 mph. But, the 38 can get on top and run in the 50s in the Gulf slop if you want to role out. As with all deep vees sometimes faster changes it up. You aren't gonna break the 38', built solid glass and heavy.

One other key, the faster you go - the more positive trim you need, and the less tab you need.

The LX is more sensitive due to the higher CG, so a little more trim and a little less tab than posted above.

Simply put, Some hulls can't be dialed in. However, The 38's running attitude can be adjusted for all types of conditions.

Never said it wasnt fast. But I still say because of the solid glass running surface you do feel vibration more, thats not opinion.
