People that refer to themselves as captain often have an ego that outweighs their license. That goes for the commercial side of the maritime world too. Don't call yourself a captain when there are people out there making a living on the water who actually hold the title.

I do love watching the fishing shows where everyone on the boat is refferred to as captain! Gets kind of old when the conversations go as "hey captain mike where do you and captain Don think we should fish? Well captain Scott I talked to Captain John last night and he said the sand bar. Good idea captain mike, pull the anchor captain Don and lets head over there." All of this on a 22 foot bay boat!

If you are serious about calling yourself Captain. that's a bit pretentious. If it's just goofing around, call yourself el Capitan, capo di capi, supreme leader, emperor, khan, dalai lama...I won't be losing any sleep over it.

Your vessel, your rules, your responsibility, ..... for everything.
Captain, Skipper, Owner, etc.
Any or all of the above are fair.

Now on the other hand, if you insist your guest/passengers call you "Captain"?
Well, we have a thread for that.

Have had my OUPV and FGR since 92 and prefer not to be called Captain.

So if I change my user name to 'Captain Captain' everyone will hang onto every word I type, right?

Hm...Awfully nasty response for nothing. Personally, I don't really give a s**t if there are real captains or not, and you can kiss my ego. This is all for fun, remember, and I AM the captain of my boat, whether you like it or not, and just because you told me not to, I will continue. I also had hats made for my wife (1st Mate) and my son (Crew. I wanted Cabin Boy [someday he'd be a Cabin Man], but Ma said 'no'). Maybe I'll rename my boat 'The Captain' just to piss off people like you. Then I'll be the captain of 'The Captain'. Aside from that, if I wore a hat which said 'Master' people would look at me funny. They'd really look at my wife funny because her hat would have to say 'Slave'.

"I am the Master of my domain, King of the county, Lord of the manor."

Oh wait, .... that's another subject.

Nevermind.

By captain's privilege, I thought you were asking if you got to pick the hottest chic...
We know where my mind is...

I have a rule on my boat which states all female crew members and passengers are required to wear bikinis while aboard this vessel. Once below deck, this rule no longer applies. Please feel free to remove said bikini.

I can't help it if my mind is in the gutter. It follows the rest of my body.

I'll buy the hats for you if you let me watch you order your wife to wear the slave hay. I'm thinking she might have another idea.

I go fishing with friends and they'll refer to me as captain (jokingly). I don't really care what they call me but if the crap is hitting the fan they know who owns the boat and is responsible for everyone on board and they listen to what I say.

Boy, you must be a barrel of laughs at things like funerals, root canals and colonoscopies. But, thanks for the blessing and for playing. It means a lot to me.

You're on board my vessel, I'm Mate, Master, Pilot and I'm Captain!

My kids call me Commodore and I must say I like the way it sounds. But I prefer to be called The Illustrious Potentate
