Default Outboard will not turn off with key...

Have twin 89 200ETXF Yamahas...
Problem started last Sunday...
Starboard engine works just fine, cranks right up....turns off OK.
Port engine cranks right up and turns off with key just fine until I flip the instrument panel switch with engine running..
Then the only thing that turns off the engine is key in off position and flipping off instrument panel switch..

The following are things I have done to try to explain a little better as to what is happening with instrument panel and ignition switches since boat was brought back to the dock Sunday...

Only affects the port engine...

1) key off, instrument panel switch off, fuel gauge reads empty.
2) key on, instrument panel switch off, fuel gauge "reads" (backs down) below empty.
3) key on, instrument panel switch on, fuel gauge reads (at a quarter tank).
4) key off, instrument panel switch on, fuel gauge moves above a quarter tank.

Sounds like the ignition switch is bad, are you seeing any black goo on the key from the switch ?

Check harness ends for corrosion, then ohm test white wire in harness

Default New switches...

New Sea Dog switches late last season...
No goo on key...
So what is being suggested here is that switch wiring/harness IS the issue?
If it is not are there any other possibilities I can check while I am at the boat?
Only an hour away but all suggestions would be welcome if the original response is not the issue.

Thanks

From what you describe the problem is at the switch, not necessarily the switch but the wiring. As said check all connections and ohms test the switch.

Probably a bad wiring harness.

Not sure this is relevant to your outboard. I had a Volvo I/O fail to shut down with the key switch and traced the problem to a failed diode in the wiring harness. There was a wire from the ignition coil that energized the alternator field. This diode was supposed to block feedback to the coil from the alternator.

Probably and for whatever reason your Yamaha key switch or the engine harness get power from the switch panel and not trough the key switch so he still get power even if the key is in off position.
Check again your connection and think if you changed something in your electrical connections.
