Default New 300 HP motor- best bang for the buck ???

I am looking to repower a project boat. I need a new 300.

What's the best bang for the buck?

The Suzuki seems to have some great pricing.

The existing controls are 10 year old Mercury but I thinik they will only work with an Opti (250).

I don't think you can beat a 300 Suzuki. They are awesome engines.

The only drawback to a Mercury Verado 300 is the price of the required DTS equipment. You will be approaching $3k for new equipment. Another $400-$2000 for engine information instrument(s).

If you can get away with 250hp, the Mercury Optimax 250 ProXS would probably be the best bang for your buck. They're lightweight with amazing fuel economy. The only drawback to the Opti is the price of the required DFI oil. It can range anywhere from $28-$40 a gallon, depending on the dealer.

Why not a Merc Opti 300xs Stroker. They are reliable, stronger than any other 300hp model, and will rig right up with what you have now and you can get one for under $20k

Used to be a Yamaha biggot, now I'm a Zuke fan.

Have 2x 300DFs 2008 models. Strong and efficient.

What are the instrumentation options for Suzuki? How about networking and integration.

I thought they dropped the 300 Opti... it's not on the website. What's the warranty?

Many years ago when I jumped ship and got on the Zuki train I said "Suzuki is quietly building the best outboards on the market." and I got BLASTED for it.

Looks like a few others are coming around....

Around 1989 I bought a Mitchell Marine 21 CC with a Suzuki 200, the talking motor. I thought I'd use it awhile and repower with a more popular brand... 3 years later I bought a new Suzuki 225 EFI and 2 years after that in '94 I moved that motor to a new Cape Horn 21 hull. I ran it 1000+ hours with never a hiccup. I know they are good motors

It's hard to define bang for the buck in a sense, because sometimes (rarely but sometimes) the most expensive things also have the most bang for the buck. The Zuke 300 certainly has more bang for your buck than the yammi 300. You can get a lot of bang with the new Etec G2, but it will also be more expensive. I've always thought optimaxes were underpriced, they perform wonderfully and are incredibly efficient. My vote for best bang for the buck would be optimax 250-pro-xs, but if it has to be really quite it be suzuki. The 250 optimax pro-xs will put out the same power as a 300 zuke, so that's something to keep in mind
