Bottom paint and gimble housing

Hello,

Ok so there is endless info and rehashing on bottom painting and outdrive protection but i have questions. The boat I have has good bottom paint and brand new repainted outdrives. I do not the exact paint the marina used on the drives but they do not know what paint is on the hull. So my first question is how do I tell what type of paint is on there, its a fiberglas hull? Second question, they painted right up to the gimble housing and im going to strip the bottom paint the recommended 1" buffer perimeter around the drives but the question I though of was what if there is paint behind the gimble drives? Of course i can take the drives off and look however that is a heavy job for me and the marina just rebuilt and reinstalled them, of course they don't remember if they were painted before reinstalling the housing on transom.

See picture before rebuilt outdrives.

Please let me know of your professional options!!.

rub your hand on the hull. if your hand changes color its an ablative paint system. short of sending out for a chem test know one can know. you can scuff up and go over with your bottom paint of choice. as for outdrive. clean them up as good as you can. scrape wire brush etc. do not use copper bassed bottom paint. use an outdrive formulated biocide. ex trilux 33

Thank you Mr. Sportfisher. I wanted to remind you that the picture above was before I had the drives rebuilt and repainted. Im still wondering what happends if there is still copper paint behind the Gimble housing and after i scrape 1 inch of bottom baint around the housing?

it will still eat away as long as long as it on the drive. you can remove all soft parts and media blast.

I've never seen bottom paint under gimble housings, its possible someone in the past bottom painted the boat while the housings were off but IMO extremely unlikely.
