Default Duramax or Power stroke

I've waited for the 2006's to come out and its decision time. How do you guys like your Duramax"s and Power Strokes Fords? What kind of fuel mileage are you getting on each. I'm thinking about pulling the trigger in the next week and need some help in deciding. Does any owners have any negatives on either the Ford or Chev Diesels. I'm leaning towards the Chevrolet at this time because of the price. Thanks for all the help. Rangerman

You will be happy with either one I'm sure......

Running back and forth to Baltimore (450 miles round trip) I just recorded 20.2 mpg. That is highway ranging from 50 to 75 and about 40 miles of city driving.

Pulling my boat...... total package weighs about 9000 lb..... it dips down to about 12 to 13.

I've got about 13K on it and I've had one electrical problem that caused the windows on the driver side of the vehicle to go dead as well as dash lights and turn signals.....fixed at no cost of course.

Go with the vehicle you like and don't let a couple good or bad posts sway you.

Good Luck.

Yea, it's an endless debate. The best choice is likely which dealer in your area has the best service reputation.

ESfishdoc: Thanks for your reply. This is the kind of information I am looking for. It sounds like you are getting good mileage at 20Mpg. Do you have the chip? Thanks again for the information. Rangerman

I just drove both this weekend and pulled a darn'd expensive trigger. Having talked with friends that have both I decided that it's a coin toss.I ended up choosing the Ford, King Ranch diesel. The Chevy seemed to drive a bit better on the highway and was maybe just a tad more quiet. But having a conversation in either is easy without raising your voice. The Ford seemed to have a better turning radius and I liked the fit and finish better. The interior was more comfortable for me also and seemed more modern.Good luck in your decision. If you like, I can run the consumer reports price numbers for you, just let me know.

Not even close,Ford! I own a Dodge/Cummins,but owned a few Ford/Powerstrokes.Have no complaints with the Ford or the Dodge.Just never cared for the Chevy cheap fit and finish and out dated style.

No chip..... I can get better mileage if I keep it under 60 and go slow off the line..... but every once inawhile I just have to dust someone ticking me off

If you are looking at the 06' trucks, chevy has a new automatic, a 6 speed allison, supposed to be years ahead of anything else on the road. They seem to have the bugs worked out of the duramax now, had a few minor fuel injection issues through 03, but haven't heard of any lately. That being said, if it was me, I would go with a dodge and a 6 speed manual, automatics have no place on a true tow vehicle. something that is used to drive around town and ocationally tow something they aren't bad, but for regular tow duty, a transmission with a real (and slip free) clutch is the only way to go.

autobaun 70: I just drove an o6 Chevy today with the new 6 speed allison and you are probably right about being years ahead of anything else. They are nice. I would like to get some mileage numbers on the new 06'S with the new 6 speed transmission if anyone has bought one. Thanks for your reply. Rangerman

Rumor has it that Ford is discontinuing the 6.0 diesel. Why? I wonder.

I hope not. I just bought one and was told all the "quirks" are ironed out of these things. I did hear that they were going to put a diesel option on the F-150 in 2007. I wish they had that now, though.

Get a duramax. I have an fx4 f 250. It is an 05. Drives like - Sorry, I will learn to watch my language -, gas mileage sucks, and not nearly as comfortable as a chevy. What a mistake

The 06 Duramax has also been upgraded to 360 hp and a 650 ft lbs of torgue, when combined with the above mentioned Allison transmission.

Just picked up my truck last week. It's an '06, 4x4, duramax/allison in a crew cab. Has 500 miles on it now and it says (in the DIC window) that we're getting about 15mpg. As you can imagine it was down around 12 or 13 when I picked it up. Been babying it but as posted above, it's tough not punching it now and then. They really are pretty strong.

It's my first diesel so don't have anything to compare it with, but it's pretty quiet and smooth... IF... the road is smooth.

BTW, the window sticker on this truck says it is 310 HP and 605#'s of torque. I've been told the larger engine will come on later models of the '06 line.

I would think the Ford would be an equally good choice. I chose Chevy only because of a good relationship I have there.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Ken

I just did my first long trip with my Chevy Duramax. Holding it at 70 for most of the 1200 miles, I was able to get 20 mpg. I think that is pretty good for a 6000# truck.
I din't get the power seat option on this truck and now realize that was a mistake. My '00 gas Silverado 2500 had the power lumbar support and was much more comfortable on the long trips.

i have an 04 duramax, 48,000 miles and until i bought my whaler i never towed anything more than 2,500lbs and i have never seen these mileage figures that are claimed on line...i average at best 15 mpg all the time unless i tow the whaler then i have seen as low as 9mpg,towing at 75-80 mph in the hills of s.c...

the trick is slowing down, keeping your speed under 65 unfortunately i can not do that, hell you'll get run over if you drive that slow here.......

don't buy the duramax for the mileage(you will be dissapointed) buy it for the great package(engine/tranny)i have been very happy with mine.....the perfect truck would be the cummins with the allison tranny...

also yes ford is discontinueing the 6.0l...

I have a 04 with the lly engine.Have about 6k miles on it and about 30% of that is towing .Right now I`m getting 15.5 total [DIC],but its gettin better. In my opinion they are all good truck and it boils down to what you like and the best deal. What swayed me was I had a 1990 1500 4X4 and it was trouble free from day one .Better yet was the deal[family ties to GM].More truck than I really need, but who knows I might get a 2` illness.

The Key to fuel mileage on a Duramax and I'm sure with all Diesels is to keep the Engine below 2000 r.p.m.'s!!I have a 2002,Seemed that around 30k miles the fuel mileage got a bit better.Mine has Stainless Dual exhaust and an Edge EZ chip.Made a 375 mile trip to N.J. last week and got 21 m.p.g.!![Mike]

i just bought a 06 duramax three weeks ago and love it. Ive had and 04, 05, duramax diesels also. Never beem in the shop except for the oil changes. I pull a gravois center console that weighs 8000 lbs in overdrive. I checked my mileage on my 06 yesterday and was averaging 18.6 mpg on the hwy. Im sure after break in it will get better. The engine has alot more power than my 05 did and the six speed transmission is very smooth. The duramax get the best fuel economy and the quietest of all the diesels on the market. Also they are offering the employee discounts on the 06 models now. You will get about 8 to 9 thousand off sticker price.
