Default they back out at the last minute

todays irritation, nice weather after 3 weeks of rain, had a planned family trip with local family members, about 1/2 hr after departure time they call and say dog is sick etc etc. and cancel out.
I spent time getting the boat ready- I guess non boaters are clueless?
Maybe later this week?

It's even worse when they back out on a planned fishing trip. Take hrs getting the boat loaded and ready the night before they call at the last minute and cancel. Those people never get asked again.

If you otherwise enjoy their company you'll try asking them again, once. If you really enjoy them, ...twice.

If not, why bother if they don't.

Hope the dog recovers.

Folks who have never owned a boat or been around them much have no idea of the work or expense involved. Most wouldn't ever do that if they just knew better. Educate them before you extend another invitation and the outcome may be different.

Makes my blood boil when people do that to me. The second worst thing people can do is be late - if I'm taking you out, be on time for crying out loud. If it makes you feel any better, I went out with a fishing buddy, his girlfriend, and her son today - I warned girlfriend and son that it was going to be sloppy and probably best to stay home...within an hour, both were blowing chunks and we had to call it

On the bright side, I did get to see the usual 10am shenanigans and spousal abuse at the boat ramp today!

Be happy they at least had the courtesy to call. If you think it was a BS story then I'd agree that they blew their chances for a 2nd invite.

The good news is that you don't have to take out people who know nothing about boating.

Most of the time it's my wife & myself fishing or what ever. Other people expect too much whether it's taking them fishing or just to the beach. I bought my boat for my own entertainment & not to entertain other people. When I do ask someone it's on my dime & it would be the last time if they canceled at the last minute & didn't have a damn good excuse.

Just as bad are those that cancel at the last minute BUT they can go next Saturday. (they really think they can choose the days)
And can they bring their cousin, friend, drinking buddy who has never been fishing and always wanted to learn.

Another bright side: I've found that a slow day of drift tuna chunking can pick up within a minute & 1/2 of every time a crew member has to hurl. You may not want to dwell on that thought though.

Default Blowing chunks

I would NEVER end a trip for someone Blowing Chunks. Guests are told up front there will be NO exceptions. In reality, if I see an identifiable organ go by, I would call the day. They are told what to expect including that they will know they will die and then the truth will hit them, they WON'T.

You fish all day , you are tired , so is he and because his car is at the ramp with a smile and a thanks he speeds off and you are left to unpack , clean the rods , wash the boat , rinse the trailer, ....

Wise words... But it's a problem when you store in the dry rack at the marina!

only a 15 minute grace period on my boat. I have left a few right on the dock. They have called me and said "hey I can still see you in the river come back and get me". My reply "That's nice, how does the boat look, next time don't be late and you can be on it. I am not coming back to get you".

Boat/fishing time is my time. Don't take advantage!!!

I had a situation where my partner stayed out partying all night when he knew we were pulling out at 4 AM. He calls me at 3 AM telling me he couldn't go. I told him if he ever wanted the opportunity he was still going to pay his share since I was still going out and could have invited another person. The money was under by mat when I returned at the end of the day. We have been fishing many times since and never had that problem again.
