Question getting a title for a trailer that was given to me after sitting idle for 18 years...

hey guys hopefully someone has some good advice, i have a feeling its going to be a royal pain in the yea

back in january i was given a 24 foot sailboat on a trailer that sat in a storage yard for the last 18 years, i was giving this by the owner of the boat+trailer, not the yard, the owner gave me a title for the boat but did not have any paper work for the trailer...

well fast foward 9 months i rebuilt the boat and just sold it to a guy in nebraska who is going to come pick it up in the spring and trailer it back,

how do i go about getting a title/registration for this trailer?

thanks
Ben

Here in Washington there is such a thing as applying for a "lost title".

I had a similar situation.I bought a project boat from Ny that came with a shoreline(out of business) trailer. It wasn't the sellers trailer, but he said I could have it.No one could find the original owner.
When I tried to register it in Massachusetts where I live I could'nt get it done. They said they needed a serial # and a bill of sale or a previous registration.

So, I went home and made up a model year & serial number and a bill of sale from a John Doe and low and behold voila' no problem.
The DMV gave me the plate and sticker.

What state are you in? Every one is different. In NC you can apply for a lost title, if the serial number is still on the trailer. If not you can get a state issued serial number and then title it. You have to get an appraisal and a bond on the title which costs about 10 cents on the dollar of appraised value. It's a bit of a nuisance but do-able. I got to learn all the in's and outs a few years back.

I bought a boat and trailer from a friend right before he passed. One of the items on the title was left blank. The wonderful DMV lady stamped "Hot Title" on my paperwork and told me to go ack and get it re-signed. Had to go through the whole process as if there was no title and on top of that the plate with the VIN # had corroded off. It took almost 3 months to get the new VIN and title.

Every state is different. In NJ you could register just about any trailer as homemade and get a plate for it. I had to do this for an old trailer I had.

Get someone to write you a notarized bill of sale from SC. They don't title trailers, and NC will let you apply for a title with a BOS from such a state.

Got my trailer with my boat but it did not have a title. Do it homemade and call it a day. I took a list of parts to make a trailer and the weight class you need and they will give you a new homemade title. Works in New Jersey.
