Default your boating pet peeves

me and a buddy had our boats out on a busy lake this weekend and got into a discussion of our boating pet peeves.

he has a 22 foot moomba, so his were:
- jet skis (they are quite fond of his wake. i refer to them as parasites.)
- idiot skippers in jet boats (one did a power turn right in front of us)
- rednecks in $500 boats

i disagreed with the rednecks part, as i am a "to each his own" type of person so long as they aren't bothering others. so, my pet peeves are:

- people fishing off the dock while i'm going in to trailer
- people wading on the launch ramp when it's busy
- skippers who ignore no wake zones and pass me
- people fishing in the lake's boat swim area

people who throw trash overboard!!!

was on a fishing charter out of destin once, and was facing astern, and a coke can came floating by... i thought at first, damn trash in the water, so i look up at the bridge only to see the half-wit mate throwing a chip bag over the side. Exchanged words with them about it. when we were catching some AJ's a buddy's line got tangled, so the mate simply cut the balled up mess and threw it overboard... that was the camel that broke the straws back. about 4 of us on there were boaters and let the mate and the capt. have it...

jet ski clowns....especially when your fishing backwaters and they blast by you at 50mph, 10 feet from the boat, scaring away every fish in a 100 yard area. This is why I always have a few weights in my pocket.

sailboats sailboats and sailboats. don't get me wrong, I CAN sail, used to race lil boats as a kid, a nice sail can be fun. but, you do NOT have the right of way all the time. And if you're motor is running, that should be obvious, I can tell as you cut me off!

Jet skis that don't use chanel markers. Seems like they just blast across your bow and don't care.

- ""rednecks in $500 boats"" be careful, sometimes that is all they can afford,,
Jet skis, should have one day a week that allows jet skis on lake,,,,maybe Tuesday,,I once heard of a guy who keeps a 12" silver/red lure on a rod, throws it in front of the jet ski if they get too close,,
People at the dock who spend 15 minutes blocking the ramp putting ice chests, towels, toys in or out of the boat. Sure I put stuff in the boat at the launch, but about 30-45 seconds worth.
People backing down the ramp on me while I am trying to start/warm up or get wife into boat.

Boaters who cruise up to a 5mph bridge at 30...then chop the throttle the second their bow hits the bridgeline then gun it right back up to 30 as soon as they clear the bridge shadow. THEN they look at you funny when you yell at them as they say with a straight face " Hey, I slowed down to 5"...never a cop when you need one

yeah i'm with you... that was his part of the list. besides, sometimes a used boat "costs $500" when the tax man cometh.

One of my biggest pet peeves -people that think the price of thier boat gives them more rights on the water. People that think the size of thier boats gives them more rights on the water. People that think the speed, or lack of speed, gives them more rights on the water.

Typically, the most knowledgeable, informed & able boaters I know are the rednecks in $500 boats. Those rednecks are probably on the local body of water 10x the amount of the people that show up for specific seasons. Fishing season, waterski season, go-fast boat season, pleasure boat season, winter... those rednecks are usually on the water for all of the seasons, and then some.

You see it every year, the fishing experts all show up when the big ones are around. They know more than the rednecks. As do the go fast types, as do the skiiers, and the cocktail crowd...

Jet Skiers that are Inexperienced. Came into the inlet once slowing down from 45mph, when a jet ski does a U-Turn right infront of me. Missed the bow by 30'. They laughed and kept cruising. I guess they don't know what can happen when a 10k lb boat hits a Jet Ski doing 45mph.

Sailboaters also, I don't hate them. But do they really need to run straight Mack-Dab in the channel.

How about people who don't know what IDLE SPEED ONLY / NO WAKE ZONE for the 300' from the landing to the open water. Really?!?!? Are we in such a rushed society now that the extra minute to idle out is burning such a hole in your throttle?

Been fishing the bank in a lake (a large lake with plenty of room for boaters) and had more than one boater run between me and the bank while I have lines in the water and fishing the bank. Too hard to swing wide around me in the middle of the lake?

People that throw their waste fishing line in the water.
Jet Skiers in general. Expecially those that run all over you.
People that throw trash in the floor of my boat knowing it will blow out.
Boaters that run between me and the shore if I'm fishing the shoreline
Boaters that anchor inside the channel markers
Fisherman that troll in the waterways and inlet.
Boaters that have no respect for their fellow boaters

I rather go fishing with a red neck in a $500.00 boat any day than one of those guys in a brand new fancy boat with a rod in every holder all rigged the same. How do you fish 10 rods with popping corks anyway? Half the guys in fancy boats around here can't even catch bait much less fish.
