I don't know if this is the problem but you may want to check it out. I have an OMC I/O. I don't know what year yours is but Mine is an 87. I had a problem with the motor not starting last year. I finally figured out that it was a bad condenser (a $10 part). A mechanic told me that over the winter they will fail sometimes. The thing is my boat would run fine sometime and others it would not start at all. Probably not the same problem as you but who knows.

Just curious - where did the CG event take place? There are already plenty of opinions on the subject so I will keep mine to myself.

GWcpa- a bass boat doing 70 is fishing, a pleasure boat doing 70 is reckless? Interesting view point, how many fish can you catch doing 70? That's one of the dumbest statements I've ever seen.

Hey I don't have a problem with them boarding my boat. And as a matter of fact they just did last week. Totally had no problems and the coaties were very nice.

However, it does sound like these coasties were just busting balls at this time. I don't care if I have a keg in my boat it is nobodies business other then mine. Just because I have a keg in my boat does not mean I am the one drinking. A passanger has no limit to how drunk he wants to get. Consider me as the designated driver.

For these guys to pull you over and start routing through your stuff for really in my opinion no good reason is a joke. I think a coastie can and should be able to tell by the looks of things if there is a problem with the drive just as your normal everyday police officer does.

Sounds like you happened to be out during a training day. Here in Charleston we have a CG Base and when they train new boat crew, they go around and inspect whomever happens to be in the area. Since it is training, they are by the book and sometimes overzealous. Probably because an instructor is evaluating them. My experience happened years ago before 9/11, but I was boarded by four crews in one evening. Two on the way to dinner and two on the way back. I think one was the same crew, but in different roles. If you know the drill, it's not too bad. I keep my jackets in plain view and have all the required equipment in a waterproof box along with the registration papers. I have another set of real world safety items which are stowed where it makes sense, but I keep the boarding box intact. Since I started keeping the jackets in plain view and the boarding box, it usually goes - check papers, match numbers, count people, count jackets, look in box - done. I also tell the passengers to stay seated and don't comment unless asked. For me making their job easier makes my life easier.

It was a dark and stormy night................

Actually it was nearing dusk and a burglar had raided several boats on our dock. Several of us were armed and the police boat, ten minutes earlier, had stopped to make sure everyone was ok and made note we were armed. My abs had just adjusted the monofilament beer can trip and had gone ashore. While dozing in the pilot house I was awakened by noise on the platform. Picking up the shotgun, and hailing the police, I was "boarded" by the Coasties while tied up in my slip. I damn near shot one of them! A true Mexican standoff, until the police boat arrived. Both of us were relieved and stupefyed that the Coasties thought this would be a good night to "practice raid" a tugboat, unaware that anyone was aboard and armed. Wrong pier and wrong boat. Pre 911.

Now I know the Coasties have a job to do, and they generally do it well. Sometimes stupidity rises to the surface and overeager guardsmen make nuisances of themselves. I suppose if we'd had had a beer bash that night, the police boat would have been counting the kegs on board. They don't generally get upset when we're tied up overnight and have few cool ones, as long as we keep the empties on board and don't use them for target practice.

Give the Coasties a break. I did. I didn't press charges.

Sounds to me that it was more attitude from the boaters than the CG. Probation officer/Financial Advisor????? Who gives a crap!? What does that have to do with ANYTHING!? Drinking and boats do not mix! period! Unless you tied up at a dock. There are enough wacko's out there now. Most who have been drinking. 2 beers on the water is worse than 6 beers indoors. Weather/Sun/Hydration all inhance the effect of beer. Anyway, just by the way poster posted his original message. They had the attiotude. You could just hear it in his message. Better than everyone else.

To start a flooded omc engine open the throttle all the way and crank it over. This will blow the excessive gas out and it should crank right up. As far as the coast guard they have to deal with all types of situations. They get to fish out the dead bodies after the accidents. They sound like they were going buy the book which is what you expect rookies to do. More seasoned officers probably would have accessed the situation and left you alone after the first stop. Give them a break they, have a big job with all the potential problems after 911.

I guess I'm one of the few that understood that stating their profession was for the fact they had a business or reputation to protect and not that they expected special treatment.
They were hassled and it's hard to believe that is all the CG could find to do. Typical situation that gives alot of LE a bad rap. Get real.

Sorry to hear of the harassment, appfan99...

I'm glad to know law enforcement is finally cracking down on those financial officers and probation officers that think they can go out and drink a six-pack . Whatever happened to "reasonable cause"? You may have been "targeted" because you looked like a willing, cooperative victim. Kinda' like stopping a "soccer mom" for a seatbelt violation instead of the brand new luxery sedan w/black windows, 2 foot tall wheels, and "boom-da-boom" radio, soccer moms don't shoot back.

Overzealous law enforcement intent on trampling your rights. You should have asked them if they have ever heard of 42 USC §1983. If not, they may want to hit the books.
In fact, the language should be on a placard conspicuously posted for the boarding officer.

Advocate, not sure what 42 USC 1983 says but doesn't the USCG still have the right to board any US vessel at any time without probable cause?
