What To Do?????
 
Hey guys new to the site and absolutely love it!!!!

Ok so I have a 1995 Bayliner 2002 WA with an imfamous Force 120. I bought the boat literally before I bought a solid car after graduating from college. The boat's hull is in good condition. The gelcoat is flawless, I do have a few of those spider fiberglass cracks etc. but the boat still has plastic on the cushions in the cuddy, it only had 80 hrs on it when i bought it 3 years ok.

Anyways, is it worth spending about $10k to repower the boat with a new OB preferable a Yamaha or should I look to sell it and get something newer..... ( probably I'd hope to get $5K if I could find a buyer ).Just not sure what to do.
Any insight or advice is greatly appreciated. THANKS!!!!!

Some will say repower and some will say sell. It's really up to you... if you like the boat and have the money, then there you go. A reliable motor is the single main item that makes a particular boat a nice package.

Does the outboard run good? I've seen may force outboards still going strong, its different if your planning on taking the boat offshore but if your just cruising around a smaller lake run her till she dies and then worry about a repower.

It's a very difficult question to answer. You need to ask yourself... Do you really like the boat, layout, and does it meet your needs? If yes, then keeping it starts to make a little more sense. Do you plan on outgrowing it anytime soon? If so, then moving up in this "terrible" market may make sense. That's what I did. If you were to sell and upgrade, are you looking for a $10-$15k boat or are you looking to spend more (and are you able to do so financially)?

If you decide to keep the boat and repower, I would make sure that the hull can handle a 4 stroke engine due to weight. Many older boats can't. If not, you are looking at E-TEC, Opti, HPDI, etc. These can all be good engines. The decision as to what is best should really be based on local service and support. Again, there really aren't any bad engines anymore.

Also, have you considered a repower with a newer (used) engine that someone is upgrading from. This will also save you $$$, but you will most likely have to re-rig anyway, which still adds to the cost of the repower.

If you let us know where you are located, I'm sure that someone can make some "local" suggestions.

NO - you can repower but do it with the thought of keeping the $ invested in the motor more equal to value of the boat - no doubt you could up grade from the Force but going new you will get killed on any resale. If you could find something in the 5K range that would make more sense, sounds like the boat is nice and you would like to keep it based on $ invested it couldn't be replaced, just try and keep it balanced.

Thanks for the response. I totally get what your saying and that's what I was trying to do was possible get a leftover or find someone who upgraded because they had the money to spend but still had a good engine.

As far as a 'local' response I'm in NJ too. Parents have a house in Seaside and every summer I worked and lived at the Jersey shore. Any advice of any good marinas is greatly appreciated.

I've talk to Coty Marina and NJ Outboards in Bayville.

I agree with the dog. Look at those boats on the market and you will find 4 or 5 year old boats with low hours for the same or less than the cost of a new motor. Basically, the motor is the cost. The boat it is on is nearly valueless. Your boat is 14 years old so don't put more into it than you are willing to lose.

OK, I know I am going to get stomped on, let please let me state, this is just an opinion.

AND

Being on ant boat in the water sure beats standing on dry land.

The dilemma you have is one reason my family purchased the boat we did. The hull has a lifetime warranty. In that it is a 2005 model, I have five years from April of 2005 to transfer ownership to my son, currently a college student.

When I get where I can no longer launch and operate my boat, it will be my son's. He can replace the motor and all the electronics much cheaper than buying a new boat. Because it is plastic, we do not have any gel coat cracks to worry about or any gel coat / fiberglass to either polish or repair.

I want my son and his family (at least I hope he has a family, just not yet) to learn to enjoy the water together. It is my hope, yes I said hope, that this will be a gift that will go well past my lifetime.

Good luck with your decision. Regardless of what you do, stay on the water.

OspreyVic, I've seen you post a few times stating your boat was plastic. I'm just curious because I've never heard of a plastic boat...? Maybe you could PM me some info about your boat?

Triumphs (formerly Logic Boats) are formed from Roplene, in closed molds. They are, well, almost indestructable, but they don't have the shine that standard gel does. But you can beat on one with a hammer and it won't bother it. Or hit a piling/dock faster than you would have thought you could with an ordinary boat with no ill effects.

But they are pretty damn nice boats. They flex a little more, but I like them. :thumbsup:

To add just two things to what Osprey said, 1) A number of rental operators have/are using ropelene boats, as they claim they are ideal for the abuse that renters give a boat, and 2) Search the Boating Forum, there have been several recent threads about Triumph boats, with several owners chiming in and a number of opinions, pro and con.
